Thinking of moving the group to Groups.io

Thinking of moving the group to Groups.io

2018-02-02 by Steve Greenfield

I have quite a few groups on Yahoogroups. All are experiencing intermittent problems.

I'm considering moving to Groups.io. The existing Yahoogroups would not be deleted.

Opinions?

I'm the listowner.

It's up to you Steve, just let us know where you move
the list to.  Hopefully, we can still get the chit-chat via
email without going directly to a web site.

Hi Steve,

Group.io seems to work much better than yahoo groups.
I am a member of Softrock40, they moved few months ago, and it is fine.

Just my $0.02,

Most of the tek groups have moved. The reliability has not been a
problem. The only down side seems to be that the photo albums are not
easily searched. I've not been looking, so I can't comment on that
personally.

Of the groups that I know of, nobody has insisted that the group move
back.

Not sure if there are levels of paid and unpaid service, though. Just
heard a mention of it.

I would recommend that you disable comments in the Yahoo Group otherwise
it will be a mess with some making comments at Yahoo and some at groups.io

Steve,

I am a member of a bunch of groups, some of which have moved from Yahoo to groups.io with no problems. The groups.io web GUI is certainly much, much easier to use than the Yahoo NEO interface.

I have for several years now thought that Yahoo's insensitivity to complaints about the NEO interface is indicative of larger problems there. Using a facility that is dedicated to hosting forums makes a lot of sense to me. Continuing to use Yahoo does not.

The one issue with moving to groups.io is the cost of storage. To my knowledge, it is not free of cost. However, I believe that it is relatively inexpensive, particularly is it was covered by a bunch of forum members contributed $1/bunch each.

I certainly would support such a move.

I am on several lists which have moved from Yahoogroups to Groups.io
and it is a great improvement.

I would  check out, "PG Offline 4" I have backed up my favorite sites with it.
A great backup tool you can also transfer all the files to groups.io if you so desire.
Groups.io provides that as an option but yahoo groups seem to be going through some kind of abandonment.

Robert

Any site is of any use to me I use the PGOnline software to keep a
personal backup. Have you verified in in a doomsday scenario the backups
can be used to restore a group at groups.io?

No, but they do offer backing up yahoo groups.

It would be helpful if everyone would leave at least some of the previous post that is replied to.

Given the lack of activity here ... did the group move somewhere else? Or this is still 'the place' but it is just very quiet?

With the yahoo's new policy, I'm abandoning my registered mail addresses. Consequently: no yahoo address no groups.
I hesitated for long but yahoo is really sucking too much. That's a trade off. Too bad !
But I would really enjoy to find back these groups on another server. Please add my vote for moving !

Kind regards

I'm thinking to leave the group as I never ever used toner transfer after I tried it.

I use presensitsed boards.
Black opaque image on clear photo set film, a 30 year old UV sun lamp...
A photo tray with Ferric Cloride rocked back and forth to etch in my kitchen sink.
Easy peasy and not so overthunk.

Toner transfer is only one method, the group is about more than that.

But it is up to each individual to determine if they get enough out of the group.

HI Don
The reason some of the people here are getting repeatable good results and others like yourself not so good is a lot to do with the type Toner your particular printer uses
I use the Samsung ML1680 which is a monochrome laser machine, now using third party Toner which works identical to the original and still gives me good repeatable transfer for through hole PCBs.
If I needed surface mount or dual trace I would then consider other options because I have better things to do than wasting time on something that may or may not fit the purpose.

All the best boys and girls
