I have a Brother 420 mono laser printer that is not being used. How could I mod or use it for home PCB making? Is anyone aware of specific mods or uses for this printer? Thanks.

What is the DPI of it 1200 best 600 maybe, do you have software also to adjust settings of your printer? Is you ink factory as it is better than replacement companys other than Brother in toner transfer aspect of PCB making at home? Toner Transfer and positive development plus negative development all can be done with some laserprinters as far as I have ever heard.

There are two popular methods for making PCBs with toner transfer. Hot and Cold. The cold method involves using a solvent mixture(acetone and alcohol for one ) to soften the toner image and make it adhere to the PCB. The other method uses heat (a laminator or hot iron) to transfer the toner image to the PCB. It seems that the Brother toner formulations require a much higher temperature than ,for example Hewlett Packard printers, for successful transfer of the image using heat. Just try some experimentation. Mike N. I have a Brother MFC 7860DW which I use for hot toner transfer. It works pretty well. My HP LJ1102w does a poor job. Never have determined if it was the aftermarket toner or the HP itself but since the Brother works fine, I have never investigated.

The after market has to be changed to OEM and then HP should be fine. Mine is a HP Laser Jet P2015dn and with hot transfer it works fine. It also works fine with positivedevelopement then application of green TRF. I strongly advise green trf to protect traces in etchant. That should be looked into during this brother talk as well as OEM ink.
