DLP with BROTHER HL2130YJ1

DLP with BROTHER HL2130YJ1

2014-08-20 by Slavko Kocjancic

Hello...

I looking to the DLP thread for E260 printer. I like idea but the E260
is now hard to get here. So I look the web and found that someone has
converted the Brother HL2230 to DLP too. Neither that is available. But
the Brother HL2130 is similar. So I already ordered that. I also get the
service manual. I like to get some guidance how to convert it. I know
that I need to somehow override switches, and to remove fuser unit. The
paper path is near straight so there should some job to be done to be
perfect straight, and to be room for thicker board. But what about
-voltage in transfer roller? If I understand correctly the aluminum
sheet is grounded but the transfer roller in HL2130 is in - potential.

Some guidance?!?

thanks.

Slavko.

Slavko,

Most of the Brother printers I have experimented with have the paper
path go THROUGH the actual toner cartridge, which has given me a lot
of problems getting clearance for a pcb. The path is pretty straight,
so I would guess it's possible, but would have to be repeated each
time you changed the toner or drum. Perhaps the HL2230 is different.
If you send me the service manual I'll be happy to take a look at it
and help in any way I can.

Mark

Ahhh... Now I see that too. The transfer roller is a part of drum
cartridge. So I need to do mod every time I change the drum (but not the
toner). But I think this should be not a problem. One drum life for
making PCBs is more than enought. Even toner cartridge should do a lot
of PCBs...

I don't know about PCB potential. As I understand the Transfer roller is
on negative potential (In E260 and Brother), but in curent mod the board
is simply grounded. Is it cable to the transfer roller disconnected?!?

... and I upload service manual (I see no copyright notice) so other can
check too...

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] DLP with BROTHER HL2130YJ1

Hello...

After reading DLP_Genesis I'm in doubt what carrier is used?
Is it plain aluminum or epoxy coated (insulated) aluminum.

I was thinking to make some slide for carrier so it can't slip sideways.
(for easy double sided registration...)

And the drum fragility issue. As I understand the leading edge is taped
and tape itself provide some protection. But you leave other 3 edges as
is or it's sanded (beveled) to protect drum?

As much I read more question pop out... ehhhh...

Slavko.

I think the toner might have to be modified a bit to get the board
through. The clearance is very tight.

The transfer voltage should remain connected. It is necessary to
allow the printer to properly clean the drum before and after the
print is made. In effect, while the metal carrier is present the
transfer voltage is shorted out, but there are current limiting
resistors in series with it so it doesn't seem to matter. Early on I
used a high voltage relay to cut it off when the carrier was present,
but I found it wasn't necessary.

You can use anything you want as a carrier, but the top surface of
the PCB MUST be grounded while the print is being made. If you use a
non-conductive carrier you can use copper foil tape and a grounding
clip that disconnects before reaching the drum. Metal seems easier to
me, but ...?

The drum does not seem to be that fragile. I do lightly file the
other three edges of the pcb.

Ok If I use plastic carrier then I need to apply transfer roller (or
GND) voltage to the pcb with some brush...

will wait now to get the printer...
