Re: [Homebrew_PCBs]OT Eagle vs Protel

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs]OT Eagle vs Protel

I've used Protel for years, but have never upgraded since 1995. Certain software bugs which used to seem minor are getting really irritating as the complexity of my boards go up. I don't really want to spend $9000 to upgrade

I see that a lot of people are using Eagle, and the pro edition seems pretty reasonable.

Has any one used both, as I'd like to know how they compare, without spending 2-3 weeks learning Eagle to find it has a whole other set of problems.

Also Protel does not have the ability to print white on black, so I have to generate gerber, and then use a gerber tool to create neagitve transparencies. Does Eagle have that built in?

Thanks
Ron

Have a look at Pulsonix: http://www.pulsonix.com

It's more expensive than Eagle, but is *much* easier to learn and use. It
can import Protel files.

I'm in a similar boat with my old microsim pcboards/specctra package
since they were bought out by orcad, then cadence. You mentioned a
gerber too to generate negative images; do you know of a free tool
that will invert a gerber then export it in gerber? --negative plot.
Some board houses now won't accept innerlayers in positive mode
anymore and my tools are just old enough they don't do negative
layers (at least I can't find any way of doing it).

Hmm, not sure about a free tool. I know that router solutions product does that easily, but I don't know if the demo has that feature enable.

I've also used GC-Prevue, and Viewmate from Pentalogix, but I don't know if you can export or save the gerber back out. I will check it out in the morning.

I did take a quite look at Pulsonix. It looks pretty slick, so I'm going to give it the demo a shot on a small board to see how it goes.

Thanks
Ron

Email me directly if you have any problems, I'm their main beta-tester - at
any rate, I find more bugs than anyone else. They are about to release a new
version (mostly bug fixes).

I set up a PSX Yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PulsonixUG which
you might care to look at. You could download my libraries which have got a
lot of useful stuff in them (from the Files area). The group isn't used very
much, probably because the product is so easy to use and bugs get fixed very
quickly. Contrast it with the support groups for other products.
