Diaphragm and peristaltic pumps

Diaphragm and peristaltic pumps

2013-09-20 by Robin Whittle

If anyone is looking for diaphragm pumps, such as for vacuum hold-down
of flexible PVC sheet to press a phototool to a PCB for UV exposure, or
maybe for spraying etchant, this eBay seller in Hong Kong has quite a
selection.

The seller's categorized listing is:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/haruyr_kb/m.html

but it can be hard to find the pumps. By using the search facility on
this page, for "pump":

http://stores.ebay.com/haruyr-kb/

quite a variety of pumps can be found:

http://stores.ebay.com/haruyr-kb/_i.html?_nkw=pump&submit=Search

I bought one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400569532731
Diaphragm Pump Water/AIR Pump 12V DC 400L/H 1.2MPa for Aquarium Fish tank

I haven't tried it for a PVC flexible phototool hold-down system, but I
think it would be suitable. I am only doing small PCBs and with the new
small source UV LED light source, I am happy using glass with foam
behind the PCB.

A search of eBay for "diaphragm pump" turns up 2,525 results and most of
them are too big and expensive for this application:

Go to Instructables and search for "vacuum pumps." There's a lot of projects for various type of pumps, including a reversible tire-pump like piston pump, and a DIY diffusion pump for pulling a very hard vacuum (like interplanetary space kind of vacuum). Lots of different ideas for and sizes of pumps.
