removing solder resist from pcb boards

2013-04-02 by alexhun19

I have a fairly regular supply of single sided pcb boards, about 4 inches wide and about 20 inches long. There is only one little snag: they were used as screening between other boards and to avoid short circuits they have been coated in a rather tough green solder resist.
I have tried a range of household cleaners and solvents to try and remove this coating but to no avail. Mechanical removal does not seem and option, the stuff is very hard to shift and the board is damaged beyond use to get it all off.
I wonder if the combined knowledge and experience of the group might offer a solution?

Alex
Dichloromethane (DCM)—or methylene chloride, commonly know as Paint stripper, beware, it will eat your board as well, so keep it away from the back and edge of the board.

I don't suffer from insanity I enjoy it!

There's also some citrus-based paint strippers that might also work. If you
do use methylene chloride, wear gloves and avoid fumes.

Dear Alex,

Try Lacquer Thinner available at most hardware stores or at walmart in the paint section. Just wet or soak some paper towels with it and wipe across the boards. Lacquer Thinner removes everything! Be careful it will melt pastics.

Sincerely,
Kim Kemmerly
