conductive tape for TT?

conductive tape for TT?

2013-03-15 by barthie2112

i have a roll of conductive aluminum foil tape that i bought at oreilly's auto parts a few years back. it looks like this tape on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/JVCC-AF20-Aluminum-Foil-Linered/dp/B000QDEQQU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1363358327&sr=8-4&keywords=conductive+tape) but i don't have a link to the exact product. would this be safe to use in a laser printer? i want to stick it to plain paper, print to it and see how it fares for toner transfer.

thanks,
mark

I suppose the tape itself would be OK if it were thin enough, but the heat from the fuser might melt the glue on the back and squeeze it out the sides onto the rollers and cause problems.

Before you try this, I suggest you watch a few YouTube videos on taking your
printer apart. I tried printing to a too think plastic and it did not exit
the top of the printer...

I was able to take it apart and remove the plastic from around a deeply
buried roller.

I've always wanted to print directly to metal but was afraid it would
scratch the transfer roller. At least on my HP printer, this roller is part
of the replaceable toner cartridge. So if you had a cartridge that was
almost empty, it might not be too big a risk.

Rick

Have a look on whatever your local online classifieds/auction is, ebay,
craigslist... you will probably find a cheap or free working laser
printer (or photocopier) which you can use as a test bed :)

I keep a $1 job out in the shed for this purpose.

i ask because i'm not sure how a foil would react in a laser printer. i'm using the printer on my desk at work. i forgot to tape a thin magazine page to a regular sheet a few days ago and had to pull little pieces out of the printer. fortunately i was able to get them all and didn't have to call the help desk to explain what i did it. i'm going to give this some more thought before i try it.

thanks!

Hi Mark

I suggest that you check at what temperature any plastic backing and the
glue on the aluminium tape melts. An ink jet printer with a correct ink might
be a better idea although a lot of inks that I have tried tend to sit in
globules and take a long time to dry.

In addission to other comments - consider also a laser printer is partially an electrostatic device, as such I believe the print medium needs to be an insulator and not conductive. I'll stand corrected, but I don;t think a laser printer / photocopier will sucessfully print directly onto a conductive film...
Regards all, Si.
