Homemade pcb

2013-01-18 by Hari Hendaryanto

hi,

first of all, i'd like to thank to moderator for approving me joining
here :)

my name is hari, i live in indonesia, jakarta, i work for
telecommunication company as system administrator engineer. my daily job
are maintaining servers.

oneday my colleague showed propeller clock/text on youtube to me. I was
amazed, i began researching on how to make it. last thing i remember, i
put atmega module on cooling fan. LOL. succeed. but not fast enough to
prevent text from flickered. i need to make lighter mikrocontroller
module. i need to make custom pcb layout. that's why I ended up in this
group :).

i know how to use eagle. make layout with it. pcb (or FeCl) are easy to
find here. the problems, chemicals such as positive 20 or dry film are
hard to find here (not mention it's also expensive for hobbyist) :(. I
need enlightenment on how to make simple, good quality pcb, anyway, one
of my components is is TQFP chip, this is the hardest part...i've read
some pages, but still haven't got a clue.

need help/guide here :)

thanks in advance

regards

You can do a laser print and toner transfer way. Or, if you have acces to
positive sensitized boards and muriatic acid, print in transparencies and
develop with muriatic.
I do this last way and quality is enought to do tqfp chips.
In another hand, you can send your design to an online pcb manufacturer
like iteadstudio.

hi vincentm thanks for reply

i think i'll give a try on toner transfer since the materials is not too
hard to find. is it good for very tiny traces/pads?

thanks

Hello Hari, welcome to the group.

Here is the way I make PCBs at home. It works well and I can make
PCBs in an hour:

Regarding my method, the two special things you need are UV LEDs and
presensitised blank PCB. Both are available on Ebay and don't cost
much.

Since this list allows the occasional commercial plug, I'd like to
mention that I'm a supplier of professional (not home-made) PCBs for
hobbyists. I can do 10 boards for USD19, including shipping
worldwide. My advantage is that you can come and live chat with me
and dozens of my customers 24 hours a day, about PCBs (including
getting a review of your latest design), electronics, open source
hardware, brewing beer, rocketry, high altitude ballooning, or
anything technical that takes your fancy. Home-made boards is fine,
and you don't have to be a customer, just come:

My regards, and all the best with your project.

Mitch.

If you want to do very fine pitch with toner transfer, you will need good transfer media like Pulsar pro paper or Vinyl as was mentioned in some topics here recently.

You will also need a high resolution laser printer, in good working order.

Finally, you should apply the toner to the board with a laminator or such, if you try to use a clothes iron you will likely have a hard time getting it right, especially with very fine pitch parts.

With good quality materials and tools it will not be impossible, but with the photo-resist method it might be easier.

Then you need transparencies instead of transfer paper, some UV resist (if you can't get it locally, you can always go to eBay. Boards with UV resist pre-applied may actually work out cheaper\better), a UV light source (if nothing else, you may get away with strong sunlight! - but there are many cheap ways you can make a UV exposure box - I used UV LEDs), and some developer.

I found that standard Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) worked great for developer. This was the crucial part for me, as any "proper" developer solution available locally (and on eBay) was very expensive. A box of Washing Soda is very cheap.

You can try laser toner transfer. I have not done anything as fine as TQFP but you can see my double sided board project last summer using toner transfer and HCl/H2O2 etch at http://wb8nbs.wordpress.com/. I have a 12 year old Lexmark 4039 10+ laser printer. The traces came out clean enough that I think TQFP is possible.
