Ferric Chloride storage

Ferric Chloride storage

2003-10-30 by Moore

This is a stupid question but I havent found the solution. My supply
of etchant comes in plastic bottles. I want to preheat it before
using. No, noway am I using my microwave. I have a heat gun and
figure if I could find glass product such as pyrex that had a lid for
storage I'd like to use it any suggestions?

I've heard of people using aquarium heaters.
TIME = TEMP_RISE * VOLUME * 4200 / POWER
Where: TIME is approximate time in seconds to heat. TEMP_RISE is
temperature increase in kelvin. POWER is heater wattage, VOLUME
is solution liters.

You will only get a tired arm holding the heat gun and increase
your electricity bill.

Adam.

1 ounce double-sided pcb etches in 6-8mins room-temp in a bubble etcher.
Degrease the copper before using.

I'm curious as to how much Ferric are you trying to heat up (1 gal., 5 gal,
etc.), and from what temp (ambient) to what temp (target) are you going to?

What I would suggest is to find a submersible Teflon coated heater (I have
seen them in all shapes and sizes; one size I particularly liked is a flat,
square element that sits flat on the bottom of a container).

Good luck.

Go to Walmart and purchase the cheapest crockpot you
can find. I think I paid aound $ 12.00 for mine. While
your there, pick up a kitchen thermometer for about
$3.00. They are good for measuring temp above the
boiling point of water. Just make sure the thermometer
you pick up is made of glass and has no metal parts.

will the containers hold up to a warm water bath? ifyour goal is only
around 100 degrees F. i would guess the bottles would be rated for that, for
shipping and storage. (but don't rely on my guess)

can you find any markings molded into the plastic? maybe on the bottom or
on the label that tells you which plastic they used. one other good thing
about recycling is many containers are now marked.

once you know that, you can figure out if you can set the container into a
sink of warm (or maybe hot) water or not.

remember to allow for expansion. and that the containers may not be as
rigid when warmed up. don't want to grab it with the lid off and have it
more 'squeezable' so you get spillage.

consult the MSDS (material safety data sheet, probably on the supplier's web
site or the manufacturer's) for all the things i've forgotten to mention to
be careful of ... your results may vary, not responsible for loss of items,
enter at your own risk, not valid with any other offer, etc...etc... there,
have i covered my backside?

Phil: If you use a good Pyrex container, you CAN microwave it, but you gotta
"know" how that works: The stuff is VERY electrically-conductive. Thus, the
first few mm of it act as an EMI shield to the rest, so the ONLY part that
gets hot is the "outer surface of the liquid in the container". Thus, you gotta
either stop and stir it every 15 seconds, or have a "liquid tumbler", if you
can build such! It is much faster to microwave it like this, even WITH all
the start/stopping, than heating it over a stove-burner. Just don't try to heat
it in the microwave for a full minute, full-blast, as the surface and
container in contact therewith will get VERY hot, while the rest remains cool for a
moment. Thus, if the container is not very good, it will melt if plastic, or
bust if glass (not Pyrex type glass, anyway)!

Be carerful! This is NASTY stuff, and will turn ANYTHING it touches (except
green FR-4, etc.) yellow! Including fingers!

I do my etching in a plastic container inside a larger container into which
I have poured some boiling water. I pour the used etchant back into a bottle
when I have finished and re-use it until it is exhausted.
