Could anyone offer an opinion on this drilling fixture? http://www.imajeenyus.com/electronics/20080628_pcb_drilling_viewer/index.shtml I can see that it shows the pad and hole on the copper side, but I can't understand how you align the drill bit with respect to the fixture because you can't see the dot until the hole is drilled. He also has a nice surface mount soldering aid under electronics. Baxter

The cross-hairs on the view finder show where the hole will be, once it is made. No need to see the bit, the two are aligned. Shannon is correct, once you have made you initial alignment, without a PCB in place, i.e. just looking at the drill bit through the drill stands base plate hole, getting the cross hairs matching up with the tip of the drill bit,and the frame secured, it will remain aligned, you then move the PCB around to line up the Pad with the cross hairs, the bit will drill at exactly that point every time. great web site by the way, plenty of interesting projects!! Baxter Thanks, but not particularly for the viewer, but all the other articles on the page. Malcolm I don't suffer from insanity I enjoy it! Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin The writing is on the wall. ________________________________

I am sorry, but I don't see any mention of cross-hairs in his implementation. My take on this is that he is blackening the circular insert, positioning the fixture and bit and drilling a hole for alignment. The PCB is then positioned to get the pad concentric with the drilled insert hole. Baxter

Hi, i remember some old discussions on this list about a drill press that I could never understand how it works, until saw that image. I tried to search the thread but i lack time right know. If i understand it right, and in my modest opinion, it intends to drill the single sided board from the non copper side, because the drill bit tends to slide if drilled from the copper (if it hasn't a etch hole for drilling) and avoids the annoying burrs on copper. It has a light to illuminate the bottom side of the board and when it cross the glass it will behave like a mirror to your point of view, because it has more light from the other side, and you see the down side of the pcb with the alignment hole. There are who adds a mirror so you can see the bottom of the pcb from above, in a comfortable position. But i, before the cnc, just bought a proxxon drill stand and both a collet chuck proxxon spindle for carbide bits and another with 3 jaw keyless chuck from proxxon too for hss and other tools. All the pcb's i hand drilled had the etched hole, never went through this.

Main problem right now is the board holddown. Harvey > >

A figure of speech, sorry, your implementation, is the same as the "cross hair" explanation, the base of the drill press will already have a hole lined up with the drill bit, the "viewer" just lines up with that hole, he added a small plastic insert to his assembly with a black ring drawn on it to reduce the appature for greater accuracy. the light would shine through the FR4 copperless areas pinpointing each pad, with my failing eyesight it might be worth a try!! I described setting up a web cam to view the bottom side of the PCB while drilling from the top side. I use a sacrificial piece of plastic that I drill first so it indicates exactly where the drill is hitting. That eliminates a host of problems such as boresight error. Please see: http://tech.dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/Homebrew_PCBs/message/28429 and I put pictures in top drill-bottom view drill press.pdf <http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/gLKMT4q13XDxiIgzZmifkT0BbqsHILZSk-F9mp_Cbr7hpFKpq63z_9WqZR4coro9pOPQAfkru-t0SpL73lbMtWYcu0eHtV598w/top%20drill-bottom%20view%20drill%20press.pdf> in the files section.

Those file URLs with long strings of apparently random characters are temporary and disappear after a few seconds to a few minutes. The file in in the group's files section: <http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Homebrew_PCBs/files/> top drill-bottom view drill press.pdf (yet another good example for naming files without spaces in them.) Re the alphabet soup URLs. My apologies. I learned a couple of things from this episode. I had done a quick search, copy and paste from Google for the articles I had done earlier. They pasted fine as HTML links hiding the goobly gook underneath the link. That coupled with another action -- I emailed using a Gmail account. It now appears that Gmail didn't repeat back my tech group message from Yahoo, probably due to matching source and destination email addresses in order to save server disk storage space. So I wasn't aware of the terrible mess the URLs were until someone else commented on it. I will be more careful in the future. Regards, Charles R.
