Need example Gerber files for developing GerberView app for Mac

2012-02-03 by Kaelin Colclasure

Greetings,

I would like to pull together a representative collection of example Gerber files to use for testing an app I'm developing for the Mac.

I've done a little bit of searching with Google, but have not had much luck so far. It seems that the Open Hardware crowd tends to post Eagle files or other design files rather than the Gerber output for their boards. I don't have Eagle and I don't really want to install and set it up just to generate one or two examples of its Gerber output.

The full specification for the RS-274X format includes some IMO dubious functionality (including a number of deprecated operators). I eventually plan to implement everything, but I would like to gauge how useful my app might be in its present state (with only a small subset of the specification implemented). My intended audience is… well, you and I— homebrew PCB fabricators. Thus I am particularly interested in Gerber output from the design packages that this audience is using.

I have not yet decided wether this app will be offered on the Mac App Store or be made Open Source (or possibly both, with some sort of dual-license). If distributed as Open Source, the Gerber files I collect will be made available in the source repository as part of the application's test suite. So please, no proprietary layouts!

If anyone has a set of files they're willing to contribute, please reply to my email <kaelin@...> directly so as not to clutter up the list.

TIA!

I've gotten a few submissions so far, and right out of the gate have found substantial variations in how even the most basic Gerber specs are interpreted by different CAD vendors. Please keep them coming!

Especially useful are layouts where one or more copies of the same circuit are placed on the same board, or where the layout is rotated or flipped from the normal axes. Layouts that include text or artwork to be etched into a copper layer are also particularly interesting.

Many thanks to everyone who's sent me files!

PS: If any contributors would prefer *not* to be mentioned in any "credits", please mention specifically that you wish the attribution for your files to be "Anonymous".

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
