Perfect paper

Perfect paper

2011-12-07 by bigbazinga

I went on a quest for a replacement for the obsolete HP part number Q2419A that received a rave review in the paper database and have found it. It is HP Presentation Paper (Laser) CG988A. 250 sheets runs US$12-15. Fantastic stuff. Using toner from both an HP5L and Brother HL-2140 and five passes (probably more than needed, but I do that number as SOP) through an Apache AL13P laminator set at 350F, paper floats off board after five minutes of soaking leaving virtually no clay residue and allowing 5 mil lines.

I need to mention that I really like the amazingly cheap (US$67 - now even cheaper than when I bought mine) Apache AL13P laminator. It's Chinese, of course, and I've seen nearly identical looking laminators selling under different model numbers.

The rollers smoke for some time during first use, so just put it in the garage or patio and let the volatiles smoke out of the rollers. However, do not leave it unattended while doing this. I set the laminator to its highest temperature setting to really bake the rollers. I do not see any duty cycle restrictions mentioned in the manual. And always turn the laminator to its lowest temperature setting and allow it to cool down before turning it off to avoid roller damage as noted in the instructions (glad I read instructions).

Thanks for the information. I will give it a try. I've been using magazine paper with near perfect results, but it leaves a white residue on the toner.

Sounds great, any idea where I can find this in the UK, I've tried googling CG988A and no-one seems to stock it. (well I sa no-one, not PC-World/Staples/Viking etc)...

Can anybody help?

Can anybody reccomend a good type of paper available in the UK that 'floats off the board' as the OP described without leaving any white residue?

The CG988A part number would be for the US 8.5"x11" paper size. Doesn't your side of the pond use the A4 size or something? I think your best bet would be to search using the keywords "HP Hewlett-Packard premium presentation paper glossy laser" without the quotes. Odds are that the A4 (or whatever) sized HP paper of that description would be the correct stuff. And it is WELL worth finding. I will never bother to use anything else. To avoid possible future paper formulation changes by HP (although the new part number performs just as well as the old one according to the database entry about the old type), I'm going to buy another 250 sheets even though I've used only a small fraction of the 250 I already have.

This may be the A4 version, HP part number CG964A. The weight and brightness figures are the same and although it doesn't have "presentation" listed in the item name, it's prominent in the usage description:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ie/en/sm/WF06c/A1-12771-215517-3445103-3445103-3446179-4039114.html

Although HP doesn't call it a "photo" paper, Amazon UK does:

This sounds promising, after your first post about this paper I looked on eBay for the CG988A where the price was nice but the shipping cost was terrible.

I just had a look on Google and found this: http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/photo-paper/hp-laser-gloss-presentation-paper-120gsm-white.asp

Unfortunately they don't seem to have the HP code number, nor is there anywhere listed where it's sold (perhaps out of production) but the title words match more than the CG964A does.

Maybe worth looking into?

If you will send me your address I will check to see what actual
shipping rates would be. Office Depot here in Dallas has the paper for
about $8.00-$9.00 for 250 sheets.

Well as I mentioned in another thread, I live in New Zealand, which doesn't help.

Cheapest I could find for something that heavy (2.24kg) was Priority Mail International Medium Flat Rate Box for $45.50.

Of course there may be other options but I don't know of them.

Re: Perfect paper

2013-05-27 by Balbir

Sorry I realize this is an old thread. But I am looking for a good paper for my printer (HP P1102W). HP CG988A is not available in the UK. Has anyone tried CG964A or CG966A ? Is there any paper in the UK like CG988A that give clean transfer and lifts of easily.

regards
Balbir
