I wonder why no one sells them, I've shipped a lot of books to the EU over
the years, and usually shipping is not all that bad, but there are
exceptions. I'm shipping some vacuum tubes to Spain today for something like
$8US, but it takes quite a while. I shipped a book to Iceland a year ago for
something like $7US and it arrived in 3 days which was amazing.

Let me know your country, I've got a friend that distibutes pretty much all
of Lindseys books and I'll be seeing him at the end of the month. Maybe we
can work out some kind of deal.

I think it depends on the shipping method. I've sent hardware to a number
of countries with no problems whatsoever, using the normal ol' postal
service. UPS charges an arm and a leg to ship overseas. They bump orders
by something like $30US simply to process the customs paperwork. (If
you've never filled out customs paperwork, it's about the size of an index
card with maybe 10 lines to fill out at the most. If I could make $30 for
every one I filled out, I'd be tempted to change jobs.)

Thanks for your offer, but i just talked yesterday with a friend about
those books.
I remembered he buyed his laptop in the US (it was WAY cheaper there, the
same device),
His sister lives in NY and occassionaly visits her family...
He sayd it would be no problem to order some books for me and his sister
can bring
them here just like the laptop...

This way it will take some month, until his sister is going to come for a
visit again, but that is no problem for me...

Anyways.. country would be Austria - what do you estimate shipping would
cost (for the 7 book metalworking shop series)? If it is not too much i may
think about it..

My last "order from the US" experience was not so good...
total cost for ~$20 printer replacement parts was about $120... with
customs and all..
I needed the parts, and they were worth it... since then i avoided orders
from overseas...

USPS Global Express from anywhere in the US to anywhere in Austria is:

Large Flat-Rate Envelope $9US
Variable Weight $12

This is assuming the books weigh in at a pound (which is pretty close.)
They're small enough to fit in a large flat-rate envelope. Figure $9 US,
plus customs paperwork.

If Lindsay won't ship to Austria, your friend's sister probably could.

I am new to making my own PCBs, is there free software that is a
standard (I use Linux and Windows XP)? I have heard of Eagle and
Protel, I see that Gerber files appear to be the standard for PCB
houses.

Before I was hand drawing the lines on copper boards, now I think I will
try the photo-resist boards from web-tronics, with my ink jet and
transparencies.

thanks and happy etching
Ted

Eagle and WinQCad both offer free demo versions that allow you a
limited package.

I am using Qcad as it seems to be much easier.

the demo if fully functional for a 2.3 x 2.3 board and up to 500
pads/pins.

not sure what Eagle offers as the free output version.

QCad (google winqcad or qcda pcb) is not the linux Qcad.
for $99.00 you get any size board but are still limited to 500 pins,
then the price goes up.

it's got some clunkieness, but it just seems easier than Eagle.

Also the auto-rout is a great product.

I use USPS, and if the item is too big, as some countries limit physical size, then the price jumps up quite a bit through DHL, but they are a lot less than UPS or FedEx. One issue to be concerned with is the dept of commerce regulations as to what can go where, but other than that Intl stuff has been pretty simple
