The ever elusive transfer paper + 75% off on all HP paper at Staples

The ever elusive transfer paper + 75% off on all HP paper at Staples

2011-07-07 by Kamal Shankar

Looking for that ever elusive cheap paper that makes transfers fast both
by steam iron and laminator, and comes off very quickly with minimum
residue on the board.

The only source of glossy paper now, in my house is the Costco coupon
book, and it seems they have been using more recycled content than
before.

After a very thorough reading on the massive paper list at
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Homebrew_PCBs/database?method=3DreportR\
ows&tbl=3D3,
I had narrowed it down to the following that seems to be the best of the
bunch:

    1. Georgia-Pacific Image Plus+ Ink Jet Paper
    2. HP Presentation Paper
    3. HP High Gloss Laser Paper Q2419A
    4. HP Photo Paper C1847A (now Q5437A)
    5. HP Premium Inkjet Coated Paper 51634Z
    6. International Paper JetPrintPhoto Premium Photo Paper
1019902744
    7. Reynolds Parchment Paper
    8. Reynolds "Release" non stick foil
    9. Staples "Picture Paper" Item Number: 471861
  10.    Hammermill Color Laser Gloss 16311-0 {HAM163110}
  11. Kodak Gloss 6.5 mil 191-2369

Unfortunately, all but the last two are untraceable for purchasing - no
sources whatsoever sell these anymore :-(
I was able to locate sources and price for the last two:

Hammermill Color Laser Gloss
$12
http://www.staples.com/Hammermill-Color-Laser-Gloss-Paper-8-1-2-x-11-Rea\
m/product_655755 $9
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hammermill-Color-Laser-Gloss-Paper-8-1-2-x-11-\
Pack-of-300-Sheets/14915560 $8
http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=3D182523
Kodak Gloss 6.5 mil 191-2369
$5
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kodak-8-x-11-Photo-Paper-Glossy-25-Sheets/1427\
7842 [~$60 for 300 sheets] $14
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Kodak+-+Photo+Paper+Gloss+100+ct/7455363.p?i\
d=3D1125464989495&skuId=3D7455363  [~$42 for 300 sheets]

There is a reson why I wrote this post : the list of paper needs to be
updated.

With no "date" column in the lists, I don't know who entered
the feedback when - this information would have been very useful as
paper more than 5 - 6 years old are likely phased out.

For example, after reading the forum posts, this paper was suggested in
a board message

<http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Homebrew_PCBs/message/28463> but
is not in the above list
Staples=AE Color Laser Paper, Glossy, 8 1/2" x 11", 300/Pack
0001&catalogId=3D10051&partNumber=3D633215>

It would be great if any of you can suggest new paper or share
sources/sellers for the above paper, and I will update the list.

I would highly appreciate suggestions regarding HP paper as Staples has
a special 75% off on all HP paper ending this week using Coupon Code:
57442.

The last paper you list, from Staples, has an invalid link. It should be:

http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&partNumber=633215

This is the paper that I have personally found on par with the Pulsar paper. It almost always comes off in one piece after soaking and leaves little residue. Unlike the Pulsar, it is not reusable. However, I have had little success with reusing the Pulsar. I use a laminator with 8-12 passes for double sided boards and have not tried it with an iron. The one big advantage with the Staples paper is it doesn't appear to stretch as badly as the Pulsar, which isn't a problem unless you want to automate the drilling process.

I have also used the over the counter glossy Kinko's (now Fedex Office) paper but it does not wash off cleanly and leaves a great deal of paper residue behind after soaking.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Terry,

I have got great feedback about that paper.

The links all got mangled, but you can figure it out by deleting some extra characters.

I would highly appreciate suggestions regarding HP paper as Staples has a special 75% off on all HP paper ending this week using Coupon Code: 57442.

Also, this is going to be $1 next week : http://www.staples.com/HP-Everyday-Photo-Paper-8-1-2-x-11-Gloss-50-Pack/product_809757

By the way - which laminator do you use?

I am looking to buying one that can satisfactory work for .062 inch material too.

Thank you.

Staples does not sell it anymore though.

I was able to locate, what seems to be, close matches:

http://www.staples.com/HP-Everyday-Photo-Paper-8-1-2-x-11-Gloss-50-Pack/product_809757

http://www.staples.com/HP-Laser-Presentation-Paper-Glossy-8-1-2-x-11-32-lb./product_863054

If these seem something you would use, let me know.

Let me just say "True dat, true dat", ie that I agree 100% with what Terry says about the Staples Color Laser Paper, from my own experience, although I wasn't awarethat the Pulsar paper streches since I drill the holes manually..but this stuff is definitely "da bomb"...as in best ever...
