THINK MINIMUM machine.

I know we all want something to do everything, but if you look at
your wallet today, what would you be willing to buy ?

Remember, there will always be a bigger/stronger revision.

You are right with "absolute minimum cheap" etc.
but i think the following:

I don't have an urgent need for a pcb cnc drill. I can continue to do
manual drilling for now.
And i don't want to spend the time building a obvoiusly too weak mill for
my later needs (although it might be a good exercise).
There may be a bigger/stronger revision, but i really want to start with
rev. 2 as i don't need rev 1 (which i consider a weak drill only machine).

If i look at my wallet, well, ok, but isn't it better to save the money for
the rev. 1
and put it into rev. 2?

If you could build an X/Y table for your drill for under $100.00 and
in one weekend, would you ?


I seem to remember someone put together a foot or solenoid drill in a
day.

A simple X/Y table for that would cut the total time drilling and
should yield better boards.

am I on the right track ?

I voted for this because I realize that milling a board is not the
best method, by far, but that having a machine to automatically drill
means less of my personal time, and a neater board.

This would be my next choice. Not because I want a drill only machine
first, but because realistically it's better if I start with a much
more forgiving design. I want to be able to mill non-metal like
machinable foam and wax for prototype case designs. Ultimately casting
in plastic.

NW Propmasters is a bit more of a free-form general list. Casting is
run with an iron hand by the moderator, if it doesn't pertain directly
to casting it's out. As with the CAD_CAM_EDO list, this is not without
reason.

I'm List Owner of NW Propmasters, and just a happy member of Casting.

As always, I've arranged lots of Links in NW Propmasters group page.

Both a drilling and milling machine for a pcboards are the same
machine. The both require the same size,accuracy and stiffness.

I disagree. for a drilling only machine, one could move the board
around with a plotter as 100% of the forces are pressing down and
withdrawing.

with routing, one has to also handle the side loads however light
they are.

Drilling is by far the most efficient method of metal or part removal
as would be witnessed by a simple home drill press with a 1/3 HP
motor being capable of drilling a 1 inch hole. a 2 hp mill has a
tough time with a 3/4 mill.

6 times the hp, 3/4 the power.

maybe not a truly fair comparison, but drilling requires much less
energy.
