DLP files - what format?

DLP files - what format?

2010-05-21 by Steve Greenfield

Is this Eagle .sch or Diptrace .sch, or some other program?

Thank you, btw, for letting us in on your progress.

<Sigh> It's bastardized Eagle. I have no patience for drawing schematics the way Eagle wants me to. I just use it as a drawing tool, with no regard for netlists and the like, since I always just hand route my boards, using whatever mixture of ligitimate library objects and hand made footprints works.

I'm not an engineer by trade, though I've done a number of commercial products in a very narrow niche. I'm actually a Veterinarian in private practice, though I do have a couple of other companies that design and sell microcomputer controlled products for Veterinarians. My brothers and father are all engineers, so I come by this naturally.

I'm also probably older than anyone on the list.

Mark

It took me quite a few failed attempts to wrap my head around the whole schematic/netlist/PCB concept. I have to say though, once I got the hang of it, things started going SO much more smoothly. Once you have more than a small handful of parts, it starts to get very difficult to remember what all connects to what and the ratsnest makes it easy to tell. Time taken now to get over that hurdle will save much more time later.

Eagle was one of the first packages I tried and at the time it seemed horrible. I'm sure if I went back to it now it would be ok, but there are other less limited packages out there. ExpressPCB is still the one I'd recommend cutting one's teeth on, but there are better choices once you get going.

I'm dirtier than Leon ... I ran past 70 last year ...
I also have disassembled my E260D all the way down and am about to cut the plastic paper platform ...
Does it make sense to remove the entire paper platform and cut it with my table saw?
Mark, is there room to just lower the cut portion of the paper platform and still use the built-in sensors ...
Will a programed MPU plus PCB be available ? ... I have downloaded ALL 115 mega-bytes of the IDE
... seems to be over kill just to load the boot loader and short program for the AtTiny15 ...

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: DLP files - what format?

2010-05-22 by Mark Lerman

Hi Jim,

I guess you could remove the platform and cut it on a table saw, but
you would have to do quite a bit more disassembling. I thought it was
going to be much harder to cut the platform than it really was with
the dremel, but it might indeed be faster to take the platform out vs
masking and cleaning up after the cut. Since I don't have a table
saw, I did it my way. Your way would be much neater and more
professional looking - go for it!

With regard to the sensors, you could probably lower the center of
the platform and have the mpfs and the pis work, but you would need
to add the exit sensor somewhere since it is on the back of the fuser
and cannot be used in this position. In fact the mpfs and the pis
could be mounted on the front of the printer and work via notches in
the carrier, although I would be careful about notches hanging up on things.

I think you should bite the bullet and use the mcu. The Atmel Studio4
is free, the ATAVRISP2 in circuit programmer is $35 from Digikey, and
you're all set.

I can send you a programmed board, though it will not be able to do
ds boards since I'm still working on that. If you want one, contact
me off list with your address - it should be about $5 USD which you
can pay via Paypal or mo or check, whichever is easier for you.

Mark

I am 78.

Very interesting..
People in this group is the "older one".
Seems that older people just like to do (make) something and younger
just to buy.

DIY PCB must be a dying art - unless there's a Facebook group we just don't know about.

Slavko,

Sadly, I agree entirely...the DIY culture is starting to regain a foothold
amongst us young people (Check out makezine.com), but it's still far from
mainstream.

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: DLP files - what format?

2010-05-24 by Harvey L. McRae

This is one reason I like to share what I am doing.. In the little clinic I
just put on 9 out of the 9 in attendance had never etched a board. Many had
the idea it was so complicated. Now that they have seen and actually etched
their own little board, I expect to see several trying it on their own. I
sent each of them home with a completed Dual flashing light to use in an
ambulance, police car etc.. Having a working piece of equipment in their
hand will also encourage them to make another.

In fact this morning, I am presenting them with a "Certificate of
Accomplishment" BIG DEAL.....But like we are in this group, we are having
fun in our Model Railroad group, making all kinds of things..

Have a Happy Day, all you young or OLD.
