JAMECO "Etch Your Own Circuit Board" email

JAMECO "Etch Your Own Circuit Board" email

2010-03-18 by Steve

I received an email from JAMECO a few days ago with subject line "Etch
Your Own Circuit Board". The email has a link to a website demonstrating
the use of photoresist to make PCB's. Among other things, it promotes a
mini-drill and an associated drill press.

The mini-drill is JAMECO part number 26702. The drill press is JAMECO
part number 26711. About $60 for both of them.

I don't recall having seen this mini-drill/drill press discussed here
and wonder if anyone has experience with this combination? How does it
compare to the Dremel drill press? The JAMECO website says "This Mini
Drill is excellent for drilling through circuit boards and protoboards."

Any thoughts or advice out there?

Thanks.

Steve

Looks neat - at 12,000 rpm it would drill holes. A speed control would be nice. I did note it is 220vac.

Dremel attachments are poorly designed and have a lot of slop. A better
solution appears to be the Proxxon Micromot line of tools. They're made
of metal and don't cost much more than Dremels. They have attachments to
do everything that Dremel attachments do and more.

I'll agree to this. I've changed from dremel to Proxxon. Less
runout, less noise, and better results when drilling holes (down to a
#78 for vias).

What attachments have you tried?

I haven't, other than the standard drill collet. This one is pretty
much dedicated to drilling PCB holes, although I can remove it easily.
It's also going to be part of a "through the bottom" PCB driller with
a TV camera one of these days.

I agree with your assessment of the Dremel tools, that's why I was
inquiring of the group about the JAMECO unit.

I see the Proxxon Micromot 28606 drill stand. Is that the one to which
you refer?

Proxxon has several rotary tools, which have you had success with?

That's the one.

I haven't actually purchased any Proxxon tools yet. I'm waiting until
after a move and some other things are taken care of first.

Thanks David.

Anyone else using a Proxxon Micromot 28606 drill stand? What model
rotary tool do you have?

Does that combo work well for drilling PCB's?

Thanks.

I use the D54518 rotary tool, that's the IB/E one, 117 volts, 20K RPM.

The stand I use is cobbled together from a drill stand (may well have
been proxxon but with parts removed, and a base for the dremel tool.

how to assemble a .4mm pitch QFP?

2010-03-20 by John McCormick

I made a new PCB and have a .4mm pitch 128 pin device on it. Any tips how to solder it with solder paste?

Usually I order a lasercut stencil out of mylar but at .4mm I think I will have a hard time placing it.
I placed a .65mm pitch piece a few times and I always smear the paste by the time I can get the chip in the right spot.
Usually it's not a problem as I can just use some solder wick or something but this time I am worried.
I'm thinking it would be better to glue the chip with krazy glue and place it first then use a syringe of solder paste on top of the pins.
This way I can guarantee the pins are lined up first before applying the paste.
Hopefully I won't get any shorts using this method.
Any comments/tips?

Drag soldering might be easier than using solder paste.
