How to deburr drill holes (vias) ?

How to deburr drill holes (vias) ?

2010-02-11 by AnnonC

I'm looking for a method to deburr my ground vias to smooth the drill hole for copper plating. I do RF prototypes and the PCB has a lot of ground vias. In the past, I used 2 pass drill to drill the hole, the 2nd pass, one 1 mill smaller but it doesn't seem to help much. I can increase the diameter of the via hole up to 50 mils.

Thanks
Lanny

Use sharp drills at the proper speed.

And if that isn't enough an aluminium cover plate and or suitable
bottom doubler can be used, or so I am told.

Some say using a thin sheet of 0.2mm aluminium on top of the board - an entry board, can help. I get a piece of wet and dry sand paper and go over the board before i start the plating process.

Leon,

My drill speed is 10,000 RPM. How fast do you think a proper speed should be? And what kind of sharp drill do you recommend?

Thanks
Lanny

Thanks Stefan. I'm going to try that technique.

Sharp carbide drills. The proper speed is as fast as you can ;-) 30 or
even 50k RPM would be nice, the slower the RPM the slower the feed
should be. The drills must be sharp or the RPMs won't do no good.

My drill is 18,000 rpm and I use reduced shank tungsten carbide drills.

Thanks guys. I think I can go up to 24K RPM max. I'm ordering some aluminum foils and tungsten carbide drills to try it out. If it works, I will post here as a follow-up.
