WTD: simple laminator temp control circuit

Hi all
Has anyone got a simple temp control circuit for my laminator, it only
go to 125c and i need about 170c for HP toner ?

maybe something using a pic chip

Thanks
Howard

Hi Howard.

Not a circuit as such but I modified my texet laminator by removing it's thermostats and replacing them with the thermostat from a household iron. Works a treat for me. There is a photo album showing how I did it.

SparkFun Electronics has a control for reflow ovens that will work for laminators as well. This is a kit, you need to assemble and program. The PIC16F88 comes with a boot loader in it, so you need a "real" RS232 serial interface to load the code. For $85 it's a pretty spiffy control.

I recently upgraded to an HP P1006 printer and needed a temperature higher than an LM34 would tolerate (300 *F max). I have an AD595 thermocouple amplifier and K-type thermocouple on the way from SparkFun, so I can modify my laminator control to use the AD595, instead of the LM34. If it succeeds I will post the schematic, pcb art, and code for the control.

The AD595, according to the spec sheet can be used as a control as well. It needs an output circuit and a voltage input to set the temperature. No display tho.

Thanks to all that helped with this.

What i did was get an old cloths iron and took out the thermostat and bolted
it to the
roller casing (same place where a fixed 120c thermostat was mounted) wired
it up and
set it to about 180c (my toner is HP black).

Made a layout onto some inkjet colour paper, scrubbed some pcb with brillo
pad, cleaned
with some acetone, run the board through the laminator 5 times, let the
board cool down
and then soak in warm soapy water(some of the paper stuck between tracks)
but rubbing
with my thumb soon removed it!, and all the tracks stayed on, etched the
board and it is perfect !!

So i'am a very happy chap
But i still think that i would like to use a temp control circuit, but then
i would have to fit a
transformer and psu for the temp control inside the laminator case.

Thanks again to all

Howard
PS. anyone help with a good etchant ?

Hi Eduardo Perdomo

your circuit is good, but for those who do not read Spanish too well, here is the new website (the old one does not exist anymore) for that circuit:-

That's good to hear. It at least gives you time to think about and plan if you do go for a circuit type controller.
I use semi-gloss photo paper myself it cleans off a lot easier than gloss paper.

I use ferric chloride as my etchant which works fine for me. I also made a bubble etch tank to help speed things
along.

I found this on the Web and tried it for this first time last week.
It works GREAT!!!!
Fast at room temp and cheap.

Etchant:
I've found a new home-made etchant that I really, really like. And it's very cheap, and widely available. It's made by adding 1 part Muriatic Acid (the common kind that's sold in hardware stores, which is actually 28% Hydrochloric Acid) to 2 parts Hydrogen Peroxide (the common 3% kind that's sold in drugstores and pharmacies). This etchant can etch a 1-oz board in about five minutes, at room temperature, with gentle mechanical agitation. And it's almost transparent. I mix it in a small plastic food-storage container and wear rubber gloves so I can use a balled-up paper towel to gently wipe the surfaces of the board, as it etches, which seems to speed up the etching time, considerably. (Caution: The concentrated acid's fumes would be very bad to breathe, or to have around metallic items. And the acid would be very bad to get onto anything that's not plastic.)

Howard Payne <howard_g7lqy@...> writes:

I also went with the acid-peroxide etchant, but after a few uses I
realized the peroxide would degrade before I could convert the
solution to a cupric chloride etchant, so I let a half liter
evaporate, added a half liter of peroxide, and dumped in a quarter
pound of copper pipe scraps (a 3.5 liter solution). A few days later,
I had a jade green CuCl etchant! It's very shelf-stable, I leave it
sitting on the bench and just warm it up whenever I need it.

If I were to do it again, I'd mix a fresh 3-4 liter batch of
acid+peroxide and dump the copper scrap in immediately. But only
because I want a "set it and forget it" etchant bath ready. For
one-shot, might as well use the copper on the PCB to convert it :-)

Note: even with a small one-shot bath, save it! Next time, ad more
acid+peroxide and etch. Keep doing that, eventually you will have a
large amount of CuCl etchant, ready to go at any time...

Now, if you're etching a LOT of boards, don't bother with the scrap -
you'll convert it fast enough just with etching.

Although not a temp control circuit, the Tamerica-LP-120 is a reasonably cheap ($51) laminator with a variable temperature control that goes to 160 deg C.

I came across this on a Russian site:

	http://www.artemlive.com/elektro.html

This site has some interesting stuff on toner transfer as well as
observations on the laminator.

Here is the laminator for $35: http://salestores.com/tameri30.html

NOTE: This is only a 4.7" max width.
