Coating: Acrylic or Silicone based?

Coating: Acrylic or Silicone based?

2009-11-20 by multidigital15

Hi,

I have some PCB's in a place with a lot of moisture (basically the system is on the top of a small moutain around 1000 meters above sea level).

Normally I use Kontak Chemie's Plastik 70 to protect my PCB's, but in this case it does not work. Yesterday in a preventive maintenance I had found that the PCB tracks are almost gone with corrosion.

I need advice how to protect the PCB's in this environment. I had see that acrylic and silicone based coating products exist on the market. I guess silicone based are better for this applications, but I'm not sure. Can anyone advise some produts to better solve this problem?

Thanks in advance
Joaquim

Conformal coating?

I use this spray for coating, so far it does well:

Try to find out if your coating has cracked or just poor adhesion. If
you etch your own boards rinse/wash them really really well and
perhaps neutralise after etching with a soak in sodium bicarbonate or
something. Etchant residue is a big hassle in terms of corrosion.

We use this product for MIL board here at work.http://www.humiseal.com/Datasheets/English/acrylics/1b31_english_tds.pdf
I have never seen it fail even in our humidity testing.Jim Hannon

About 30 years ago Gilbarco/Exxon used conformal coating for all the PCBs in their gas pumps and
consoles. Never saw a single corrosion problem in the coated area from the field. BTW - They made
the majority of world's gas pumps back then, so the sample size was rather large. Repairing a board
after coating was a real adventure.

Joaquim,

In a previous job, I was building electronic equipment for law enforcement, and was using conformal coating for saline moisture protection.
The product used was Humiseal 1B31, which is user friendly as it is available in spray can for low use.

I use Clear Lacquer Spray Rust-Oleum or other brands you can buy at most Home Improvement Stores.
