$24.95 GBC Laminator

$24.95 GBC Laminator

2009-05-22 by Ed Smith

I could not resist getting one of these laminators to check it out. Had no need for it because I have a GBC 18 inch laminator.

Anyhow, wanted to check temp, so I installed a thermocouple and checked it out.

With the 3 mil setting it goes up to 160C, peaks at 169C, falls back to 110C, switches off, falls to 108 Lowest temp. Big range so temp control will be added for sure.

With 5 mil setting it goes up to 160C, peaks at 166C, falls to 122C, and low is 120C.

Amazing they can sell this unit for $24.95 including shipping.

Fed up to .031 material with no problem. Have not tried .063.

Glad to hear someone else purchased one - that is from the ebay? My order should be here late next week - I had been wondering what temperature it would get to. With only 160C, it won't quite do for the Brother 2140 printer - I don't think anyway. Keep us informed about what temperature control you use.

What is it using for a temperature sensor? Sorta hoping it might be a termosister - wouldn't that allow me to just series a resistor to increase the temperature?... say up to 200C??? Naw, I'll bet 200C sould melt some parts.... Just wonder how high it would go for short term use? Just long enought to run a board thru 2 or 3 times?

Thanks for posting your info.

Hi Ken,

It uses two of the mechanical thermo switches. These switches are mostly used for overtemp protection because they have a lot of hysterisis. I mounted a thermocouple under one of the screws already there and drilled a .093" holr in the bottom cover to get it outside and used a temp monitor I bought years back. I have a big stock of temperature controllers in boxes out in the barn and will send you one when I get mine all together. Send me your address for that but do not expect to get it for another 3 weeks, I am very busy with other projects right now.

I am impressed with the laminator but it does have terrible temp control.

What I do is monitor my temp after turning on the laminator and perforn three operations as the temp rises. I watch for 100C, run the board thru to get my photo resist to lay flat but not bond, wait for 160C and run it again to bond the resist, then turn the board around and run it one more time.

I did try laser toner, ran the board thru 3 times, and the toner just started sticking. It might be if you run it 7-8 times you will get results. For me, I rather stick with photo resist for now. It only requires 100C for results.

Thanks for the info Ed - I have sent you a email to your email of record on QRZ.com - I'm also good there. Thank you so much for the offer of the temperature controller - just let me know the expenses so I can send money to you.

I sure hope my laminator gets here this week - I'll be doing some testing with it. I have ordered a temperature probe to check temperature with, but it won't be deliveried until early next week.

I am interested in photoresist etching also - have been doing some reading on that.

Ken, the temp controller is free when I get to it. I must have 200 of these that have been sitting for 10 years. I was forced into retirement with medical problems in year 2000 at age 60.

Google for "gbc creative 9 laminator"

There are two models we've been talking about, the "heatseal" model

My laminator came from MyBinding in Hillsboro, OR and was $24.95 and they paid shipping. Will be adding a foot switch now to stop the drive motor when desired. Have now sold 11 temp controller kits at $20 each to modify these and other laminators and an oven in one case. Ed w4eds@...

Here's a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Ibico-HeatSeal-9-5-Personal-Pouch-Laminator-1701987_W0QQitemZ350193609874QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item51892a6c92&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A2%7C294%3A30

That is long, but should be one line with no spaces. OR ebay item #350193609874

That thing sure works nice - Ed's temperature controller would be nice to go along with it. I just jumpered around the thermal switch to test operation at higher temperatures.... I turned it off at 425F. At 400F it will make even the Brother 2140 toner transfer.

Can this laminator be used for .062in board? Any problems with doing so?

I have ran some .062 boards thru - it does go thru as the rollers are spring loaded and will open up nicely. It sorta "pops" a bit as the boards exits the rollers, but I don't think it will cause any problems... I don't "think" anyway. Hey, it's only $25 shipped so if it does cause problems, post to the group and order another.... The extra pressure didn't seem to "mash" the traces out....

Perhaps Ed will chime in with his experience - he has a LOT more knowledge about laminators than I do....

The one I have, basically, no. The rollers in the non-heatseal one
are NOT spring loaded and have trouble with 0.062 boards.

DJ, you are correct - the spring on the motor side of my laminator does NOT allow the roller to open up. I just pulled the cover off to check - .062 board does go thru ok, there is a "pop" as the PCB exits the rollers. I suspect the rollers are flexing to allow the thick PCB to go thru.

The spring seems to hold the motor drive engaged with the roller gears - if the level at rear is pressed, the motor moves away from roller gears and the rollers stop. I was thinking I had read the instructions and it said pressing the level allowed the rollers to open.

Sorry about the bad info on rollers being spring loaded. I just ran a small 2"X2" .062 (I just checked with mic) boards thru the rollers just now - seem to roll ok, but with the pop as the board exits. I think the rollers would be damaged with extended use.

Thanks Ken and DJ for clearing that up for me. Most of what I do is with
0.062 material, so it sounds like I need to consider other models of
laminators.

One way to get around the "popping" issue is to slightly bevel the edge of
the pcb and feed the pcb into the laminator at an angle.
Works for me.

Of course , you can always buy slightly thinner pcb material on eBay. I
found the 0.040" is still rigid enough.

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: $24.95 GBC Laminator

2009-06-09 by Ed Smith

I did toner transfer with the GBC Personal laminator using temp control set at 360F and with two passes and .061 material. It is marginal because I had a small scratch left on one board. I think if you use a carrier it might not work. The total clearance seems to be .061". The 061 material is so stiff and the board seems to drop slightly going in and raises coming out creating the possible problem. I am looking into increasing the slot width on one or both sides to eliminate this possible problem. Ed

Can this laminator be used for .062in board? Any problems with doing so?

Other laminators for 0.062in material?

2009-06-09 by Steve

Previous postings indicated the GBC H535 Laminator is satisfactory for
.062 inch material, but the price is in the hundreds of dollars.

Anyone know of a less expensive laminator that will work with 0.062 inch
circuit board?

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Other laminators for 0.062in material?

2009-06-09 by michael tenore

To get a GBC H535 for a reasonable price you must keep an eye on eBay and Craigs list! I got my unit for $95 including shipping,By being patient!
When I decided to get one I kept my eys peeled on ebay and I found one with no bids very late on a weekend evening!

There is a database listing for users laminator feedback. There are others that are much cheaper that will take .062 boards listed !

My H535 does an excellent job on .062 G10 boards that I have .The front panel says the max temp is 338F but my boards come out great
when using HP Presentation paper! I have not had time to open the cover to see if there is a temp adjustment in there.

I have not tried it with Staples photo paper yet! I pass my boards thru between 10-13 times to be sure and also to make sure the board goes right back in after it comes out the back,so that it doesnt cool down between passes.

I use a HP 2100 laser printer that I found for $25! So you can go first class if you are patient!

mike
