A little slow on the reply, because I'm on digest, but it looks to me like you 
laid your LEDs out perfectly.  The overlapping circles on the backside should 
mirror (so to speak) the pattern on your PCB.  Hexagonal close-packed.  Can't 
get better distribution than that.

Aim and distance to the board are the only variables I would change if I were you.

Distance is actually further than optimal by 25% or so.  It's aim
that's the problem here, I've since lit up individual LEDs to see, and
some are off by half a diameter or so.  I'll have to map out the
deviations and adjust the holes in the board accordingly.  When I have
time ;-)
