most popular etchant?

most popular etchant?

2007-11-24 by Dave

I was just going to start with ferric chloride but after some more
reading I found I can make my own etchant by mixing muriatic acid with
hydrogen peroxide. Has anybody tried this or currently use this method
and if so, how good does it work? I have a $10 coupon if I spend $25 at
Lowes and can use it wisely on acetone and muriatic acid while I am there :)
Thanks,
Dave

You might get asked some awkward questions - actetone, H2O2 and HCl are used
to make triacetone triperoxide or TATP, the suicide bomber's favourite
explosive. 8-)

I have no problem whatsoever purchasing Muriatic acid from Lowes, Home
Depot,
Ace Hardware, Safeway, Fry's, or any other super market. In southern
Arizona (as in other venues)
Muriatic acid is an everyday household chemical used in swimming pools.
The stuff is 20 Baume.
Usually sells for about 3 bucks a gallon in two-gallon cartons.

Hydrogen Peroxide is easily obtained from Walgreen's Osco, CVS, or any
other drug emporium.
The domestic stuff is 3%. About 79 to 89 cents per quart.

You will not be "carded" when purchasing these materials in the USA.

Both concentrations are more than adequate to etch copper.

On the Continent and in the U.K. there might be some problems in
obtaining these materials
if you are not a professional who requires them in the course of your work.
At least, that is what I have been told.

Have we not gone through this at least a hundred times previously??

I picked up a 2-gallon pack as thats the only way they sell it. It was
just under $10. Its commonly used in pools here in the US and I also
used it to "etch" my floor in my workshop years ago before applying a
stain and that was the manufacturers directions.

Dave:

I have used both mixtures, and either one works just fine.
Since I never really "timed" the operation with either mix,
I can't say which is faster. Both are fast.
I only use this stuff outdoors.

Ok, Thanks for the info. I plan on using any etchant outside for safety
and also don't want to corrode my steel building :)

It depends on the concentrations.

Unfortunately for me, it seems that up here (NH) it's seasonal.
Nobody treats their pools or cleans concrete in the winter. Still
looking, though.

DJ Delorie:

Seek out some stone masons or tilers in your area.
Or people who clean and paint concrete, like garage floors, etc.
I bet that they will turn you on to where they get
their Muriatic acid.

Try Lowe's or Home Depot for Muriatic Acid. Used in washing bricks or
concrete floors.
