Laser printer help

2007-03-06 by docstein99

Looking for some advice from laser printer people here, since it looks
like so many people use the toner transfer, which I would like to give
a try.

I am using a HP Laserjet 6l found in the attic, dusty has been
sitting. I purchased a remanufactured toner cartridge for it (because
I am cheap).

So now the print comes out unsatisfactory. For example, if I print a
black and white checkerboard on an 8.5 x 11 sheet, I see waves in the
lines that vary contrast. Also getting what looks like some type of
alley down the center where some small roller hits the paper and causes
a variance.

So I was wondering if anyone knows that if laserjet 6L printers are
just junk - and to not bother trying to use this for anything other
then printing letters, or I should go head and replace the fuser film,
or possibly a NEW toner cartridge will solve the issues?

I can't really tell you about the 6L specifically, but I can tell you
that I bought an HP LJ 4 and then a Verbatim brand remanufactured toner
cartridge which left lines on the print. I returned it and got another
one which worked perfectly. I didn't know if it was the printer or the
toner but it turns out I was right.

The 6l is a good printer usually only suffering from multiple feed problems.
A lot of rebuilds are junk, many from China now. If you can scan something
that shows this and attach to email and send to me at rhb57 -at-
windstream.net (in normal @ email format of course) I can see what I think
it might be. I've rebuilt maybe 500 5L and 6L printers since they came out.

Hi,

Did you consider the cost of a new cartridge ?

Sooner or later you'll need that.

In my case I sent to scrap an old Laserjet IIIp after
a loong time of getting best solid blacks han newer
ones (was 1992)

That was good for making letter copies on 'calco type'
paper (translucid) so it got camera-ready, avoiding
costly film based output (i.e. Linotronic)

The cost factor was crucial when facing to replace
consumables.

Just the the cartridge, would above 100 dollars these
days almost a price to consider buying a new one.

Hope that helps.

Ok, now you've lost me. Can I can some clairity please, I truely
dont understand--

Yes they are like $64 - $120; I paid like $15 for the remanufactured
one which was supposed to be "guaranteed"

Solid blacks? Yes, when I print a page that is a checkerboard I
would like to see a solid black and white checkerboard, with no
variances.

'calco type' paper? I put white paper in, and expect the same WHITE
to be on the paper, not light traces of toner on the white areas -
which is what I am getting now.

'linotronic' ?? Well, ideally I would like to use the printer for a
camera ready output would be nice if possible. Which would mean that
the blacks must be 100% black and the white must absolutely be clear
with no toner - I dont know if thats too much to ask out of a laser
printer.

$100 is alot of money (for me) to spend on a cartridge when I am
uncertain that is the issue, for sure.

I paid $45 for a Verbatim cartridge. The first one did not work
correctly. The second one I got (returned on warranty) worked perfectly.
