UK Staples , Photoo Basic Glossy, is Poo and sticks like it too

UK Staples , Photoo Basic Glossy, is Poo and sticks like it too

2007-01-11 by Gary Hoyles

OK, with all the hype i have heard about this paper i went and got
some today from my local Staples store.

Just tried it and its poo. It printed just fine in the laser and
looked like it was going to be good. But as soon as the iron touched
it, it stuck to the iron. Not a good sign! So i placed some normal
paper on top and continued to iron, them dumped it in some warm
water. Five minutes later i come back to the water soaked board and
try to pull some of the paper off and its stuck solid to the board,
not just where the toner is but, also the paper is stuck solid. I
soaked it some more and found that there is a plastic coating on the
back of the paper and managed to pull that off. and soaked some more.
15 minutes later is still stuck like poo to a blanket! In fact i
think i'm going to have to throw out this bit of copper clad board
because i just cant get the stuff off.

Well i guess the paper we have here in the UK is not the same as the
stuff they sell in the staples in the US.

Has anyone else tried this stuff in the UK ?

I have a box of the same poo ;-)
It must be some type of plastic coating.
Surprisingly it does go through the printer allright.

It works very well to make cover sheets for printed out manuals and stuff,
but that's about all ;-)

I dont have an inkjet printer so im suck with this poo now.

Anyway. i have to ask the question, does ant of the other stuff in staples work well ?

I got some cheep "Tesco's Blue Stripe" Photo Glossy Paper, you know the value stuff, and it does work well, but only for board with wide spacings , say 15 - 20 mil, as it leaves small stripes of paper in between the finer tracks. I have also used the stuff from the maplin catalogue, that works quite well, but still not so good on the finer tracks. I got this Staples stuff in the hope that it would make a great board as i am trying to make a single sided board that's need tracks of 10 mil and spacing of 10 mil, each time i have made this board i have had to get a knife and cut to separate some tracks, Its getting a pain, so hopefully somebody can shout out to me "he use this paper its great stuff" other wise its off to Maplin this weekend to get kitted up for UV.

I was just going to get some UV tubes and the chemicals, not wanting
to spend to much.

Ebay is ok but i hate waiting for stuff to turn up in the post, plus
you have to wait for the auction to end before its even beggining to
be on its way to you!

OK, I don't have Mailtunnel set up on this machine, so I have no idea if
this message will even get through but...

1) I posted to the list and updated the database a few months back
w.r.t. the Staples paper changing formulation. Yes, it's a plastic
coating - I also mentioned the "burn test" for testing the paper.
Basically you heat the paper with a gas lighter or heat gun and if it's
plastic coated it'll bubble before it burns. If it's paper (cellulose
fibre) it'll just burn.

2) HP Everyday Photo Paper (Semigloss) is fairly good. You need to turn
the print density WAY up, but it literally floats off the PCB, leaving
almost no residue. As a bonus, because the coating dissolves so easily,
it doesn't pull the toner off. It's about \ufffd10 for a pack of 100 sheets,
but when I bought mine they (Staples) were doing a buy-one-get-one-free
offer on the stuff.

3) Try it on a bit - take the Staples stuff back and just say "it
doesn't work in my printer" (which it doesn't). If they don't refund or
offer a credit note, ask if they'll exchange it for some of the HP stuff
if you pay the difference in price. For what it's worth, the new-formula
Staples photo paper is absolutely dire - it doesn't even work properly
in my Epson C64 inkjet. The HP stuff, OTOH, does... Read into that what
you will.
Argos sell the stuff too:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&productId=559122
I'll get the HP item code off my paper when I get home - I'm mooching
off the wifi at university at the moment...

4) In general, semigloss papers are more likely to work for TT than
glossy papers. The old-formula Staples glossy used to leave bits of
coating inside pad drill holes, which was a pain to remove. I ended up
using a bradawl to remove it...

5) Aim for something about as thick as the HP stuff. IIRC it's about 170gsm.

Rub with a piece of sponge or foam. That'll get the paper out. Rubbing
along the length of the gap works better.

I too have a pack of Staples Poo, I gave up TT after
this fiasco. I never thought to use it in an inkjet.

Thanks for the info Philip, I'll have another try with
the HP Everyday.

Well, you won't be able to TT with it, but at least you'll be able to print on
it in some way...
The old Staples "130g/m2 Inkjet GLOSS paper" is fairly good, but all the stock
has gone AFAICT.

HP C1847A "HP Photo Paper" (aka Q5437A) is the best - again, if you can find
some - it's been out of production for a few years. Toner sticks well, and the
paper floats right off. Q2510A ("Everyday" HP Photo Paper) is the new stuff,
but I find the toner doesn't stick as well, so you sometimes get gaps. You
don't usually get fluff stuck to the page though :)

Look like people are having good results. http://www.elektor-electronics.co.uk/default.aspx?tabid=29&forumid=5&postid=1369&view=topic

You can get 100 UV leds for like 10 ukp from ebay, im gonna place to order in the morning as i have tried to do this board 3 time again tonight with no luck.

Sorry I wrote it wrong, the correct spelling is:
"Epson Photo Paper Glossy" :-( I apologize for writing paper lower case and
at the end.
Did you search for it? Google is miraculous. There is only ONE paper like that.
All the others are 'super', 'premium', 'extra' and so forth...
Try SKU # S041141 and add "co.uk" and you might get dozens of UK stores
carrying it.

PHil, Your Da MAN!

Well, i thought id give this TT one last try then it was over to UV

took a trip to Staples and maplin, got the "Everyday" HP Photo Paper,
its semi gloss and a cheap laminator from Maplins £29, not the one
that's on offer right now for £10.

Got home not expecting too much and quickly ran through a test board.
Not really cleaning the board or doing much prep.

The result the best TT board i have done to date! this board has
10mil tracks and 10mil spacing, the tracks are solid and the spaces
look a mile wide!!!!

The only thing i have to say about it , is that it does need quite a
soak in warm water, once soaked, ALL the paper came right off the
board no problems. The large filled areas could also be a bit darker.
But this is the closest to a perfest board i have come to.

THANKS again PHIll, you saved me from the horrid chemicals.

Seems i was a little fast in trying to take the paper off my first board with this paper. I just made it again with a little more care in the prep and it turned out great. If you leave it longer in the water( as Phill said earlier) the paper peels right off leaving no trace of paper on the board. All i had to do was wipe it down with a sponge after and its perfect.

board no problems. The large filled areas could also be a bit darker.
But this is the closest to a perfest board i have come to.

THANKS again PHIll, you saved me from the horrid chemicals.

Gary

If you want to speed up the soaking a bit more, put some washing up liquid
into the warm water before you put the board in. It helps break down the
coating a bit quicker.

And my name's spelled with one L, not two! :)

May even get a cheap laminator from Asda, they have them for a tenner,
see if thats any good, my last lami died from excessive cog

If the laminator is this like this one http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=99485&TabID=1&source=1&doy=14m1 dont bother, get one that can do at least 250 micron. the one i got has two heat settings one for 160 micron and one for 250 micron, only the 250 setting works , and still it ould bet hotter!
