I went the "CNC from scratch" route about six years ago. Yes, with
simple tools like a drill press, a sander and some machinery savy, one
can make something decent and useable. It was a learning experience and
I fell in love with "black Delrin". Here's a small gallery devoted to
this work that may be useful;

Would I take this approach again? No! My advice to anyone interested in
CNC would be to get as much already constructed off-the-shelf unless
the learning experience is of paramount importance.

That's an interesting species of wood you have there. What is that, radiata
alumina? :)

You're right, it's a bit much for a first project. That last link I posted
(MDF, drawer slides & radio dial cord!) would be much easier to build.
www.crankorgan.com has some simple stuff.
