Not as easy as the CRT scanning radiation, but those receivers that
use a standard tuner module will leak some Local Oscillator or
Intermediate Frequency at known frequencies - might be detectable.

I'm told they even have hand-held finders (for the CRT scan radiation?)
Plus, everybody is expected to have a TV, so if your
address isn't on their licence list, you're on their list.

May not apply in the UK. ISTR reading with interest a magistrate's
court judgement that if it received RF broadcast and displayed colour
(even teletext only) then a colour TV licence was needed. They have
to be strict because if they didn't collect this way they would have to
fund BBC from Treasury taxes.

I'm sure both these questions have been done to death on some
TV-oriented group (and uk.legal for the 2nd.) so I recommend Google.

If you turn up anything conclusive I wouldn't mind hearing, off-group.

I had no licence for 10 years, I was on a hitlist.........

(also got prosecuted twice)

Rule was a CRT if it had no tuner was not licenced, a satellite
receiver was not licenced, but if connected together so that it
displayed a picture that was received, it then required a licence.
(this may now be outdated, and just require a licence for the hell of
it, they like their money)(sorry they like your money)

A video recorder(with integrated tuner) always requires the cover of a
colour licence, because the recordings could be played back at a later
date on a colour set.

TV tuner cards in a pc require a licence, dvd recorders(integrated
tuner) require a licence

If you buy an item with a tuner (ie pc card), built with the intention
of reception, then at the time of purchase you /should/ complete a
form to register the purchase with tv licencing, any shop selling you
such an item and not doing this is liable to prosecution, some shops
just send back random registrations so as to stop that, but checks are
not made on accuracy of returns, just a lack of returns...........

Hand held detectors are now used, 'operatives' get a mailshot of
address to target each month. (my friend the postman used to deliver
them)

Hope this clears it all up.
