HP Laserjet series II (any value to toner transfer or ???)

HP Laserjet series II (any value to toner transfer or ???)

2006-04-22 by ballendo

Hello,

I've got an OLD HP Laserjet series II, with a font cartridge even.

I've been gonna tear it up for parts to use/play with, but also kept
it thinking it might have some "better" capability for toner
transfer, compared to newer laserjet printers...

But it's likely only 300DPI, so even with the straight paper path,
and even though I can get drivers and cartridges reasonably, is it
at all worth keeping?

IOW, is there some thing that these older laser printers do "better"
or are my newer HP 1100's gonna be equal or superior in every way?

Figured you guys have tried to do so many different things with
these beasts, that I'd better ask before canabalising it...

Thank you in advance,

Ballendo

P.S. If parting out is the answer, Would this printer's fuser
section be a good candidate for a toner transfer/laminator?

The 300 DPI of my IIID was not enough for TT, for me, for the 0.5mm TQFPs.

They are superior in the way that they probably still work when the newer
printers are thrown away.
I bought the replacement paper path paths for my IIID for 1eur recently,
will get it up to "as new" one of these days for general printing. I have
plenty of toner, and usually replacement cartridges go for 1eur at ebay
for this printer, so it is very cheap to run. It is more than enough for
text printing and stuff for me.

The fuser uses a relatively thin roller, but i think some here have tried
this fuser assy, hopefully they comment.

The 300 DPI "blocky" or coarsely dithered graphics from my HP LJ IIIP
is why I donated it to FreeCycle and bought the Brother 2040. Tough
tradeoff, since the Brother is certainly not optimally suited for
toner transfer. It works nicely for bulk printing, though, and I
don't have to use up ink on my Canon i860 Inkjet.

Maybe I should have kept the IIIP and converted it to a fuser-type
laminator unit, Stefan, but at that time, I didn't know about that
particular option.

I've been using my Laserjet IIP+ for a while now. It
only has 300 dpi resolution but for standard through
the hole components its more than adequate.

It's built like a locomotive and will last longer than
the new all-plastic printers. It's already 10+ years
old.

This is my first post, I have been a member since a few weeks. Greetings to
everyone..

Where can I find information on converting a laser printer to a fuser
laminator, as commented by kilocycles? I have a few old ones lying around.
We use think tinker equipment at work, I wonder if I can set up a similar
environment at home..

Old HP Laser Jets and other tales of woe-Was-HP-II, etc

Thanks, Myc, rub it in a little more! Coulda-woulda-shoulda...

On a slightly different topic, but equally a tale of woe, my hard
drive died with my EAGLE Light and other CAD-related partitions and
directories. My last backup was in mid-March, and I lost some recent
components I made for my special library. Not much else of value, and
I do have saved bmp's of the schematics and boards I was working on.

So, looks like a good time to go ahead and bite the bullet and
recreate that library in DipTrace.

Cheers,
Ted

By the way, the Maxtor hard drive started failing on 4/21, and I spent
two days transferring files from as-yet unaffected partitions. By the
time I went on line and got the PowerMax diagnostic disk and ran the
test to get the error code for the on-line processing of the RMA, it
was Sunday. The warranty had expired Saturday night at midnight!

Grrr! I went ahead and bought a Seagate with a 5-year warranty. No
more Maxtor for me; that was my second failed one.

It's really too bad you waited so long to try
DipTrace, the latest version r1.23, not only imports
Eagle librariues but also prints reverse.

rub rub rub ;)

Myc,
Well, I don't know what to say at this point except @#%& &$#@ !

I lost my DipTrace example components I made while doing the tutorial
as well. I really like the way you can lay down a string of pads, up
one side and down the other on an IC while making the "package" in
DipTrace.

That's great news on the new DipTrace version, because I did save the
earlier version of the library. I had only added since the last save
a 2SC2078 TO-220 transistor, which is a no-brainer in DipTrace, and
redone my Mini-Circuits double-blanced mixer devices symbols, and made
a couple of IC's (that may very well be in the DipTrace libraries) in
the version I lost.

My problem was that I was using Karen Kenworthy's Replicator as a
backup program. It works fine, but I was trying to filter out all of
the "superceded" files with the funny extensions in EAGLE and backup
only the .sch and .brd files, which represent only the current status
files. I couldn't get it to do that. I sent Karen an email, but she
receives several thousand of them a month, and I had turned off the
daily autobackup in the interim. Rest assured that I am adopting a
new backup strategy!

Regards,
Ted

I was just pulling your leg, a little :)

seriously, if there is anything I can do to help,
contact me off list.
