Chris,
Very nice machine you've made there.
I'd like to know what you did about some anti-backlash
nuts on the 1/4-20 leadscrews? Or are you just
planning on software compensation?
Thanks,
Ray

Mini-Mill

Hi Ray,

Actually, the nuts (Acetal) were made in my shop - I just tapped the
material. I WANTED backlash as I will need to test out that
component of the software I am working on. The bad part is, there
isn't any measurable backlash. I am sure it will wear in, but it
sort of cramps the testing and development of that feature till it
happens :-(

Chris

Smear a lapping compound mix on the screws.

You could also try Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline etc.), it should wear only
the Acetal nut (chemical not abrasive action). PJ will rapidly wear
rubber and most plastics where friction is involved and probably will
have the same effect on Acetal. It's the worst thing to use on plastic
gears and rollers even though I've seen it recommended as a lubricant
for such before. It also causes latex condoms to break and the combo is
often the reason for many an unwanted pregnancy and the spread of STDs.
