I wouldn't consider three ICs complicated...Even simpler than most 
stepper drives. No doubt you're thinking of yesterday's controllers 
like the ever popular Geico 320.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
