Homebrew PCBs

I've been kind of overwhelmed by the variety of 
toner/printers/paper/process issues discussed here.
There's a lot of great info, but it's confusing to know 
how to best start.

I'd like to make a first board. Easy stuff, no fine pitch,
no plated through holes, single sided, 80's technology
stuff. 

Can someone point me to, or recommend a best first process
to try (along with materials?).

I'm leaning toward trying to laser print to a 
sticky label backing, and ironing to a supercleaned 
board. 

Am I on the right track? Details on the process for this 
first attempt greatly appreciated.
