As said, whenever i need a new component the first time i take the "stock" part or some similar, put on new pads (from a pads library) and save it in my own parts library. i mostly use the oblong pads for DIL and similar. they are about 4mm long and just narrow enough to let one track through between the 2 pins. for most other components (which don't have pins in a neat row) i use enlarged round pads.
