Not sure what 'inexpensive' is to you.
I am using a LaserJet 2100 and it's extremely good at reproducing blacks on drawing paper. Followed by a quick density spray, results are excellent for home conditions.
It also has good linearity, which is important for 2-layer PCBs as you want top and bottom holes to align perfectly.
