Dude, seriously... Money spent on repairing that LJ 4 will be better spent than your time trying to mess with that Brother. Yeah, it may be a bit faster, but the LJ4 will last another 20 years and just work. 

At the very least, don't trash it... put it up on Freecycle or donate it to someone.
