The disadvantage of this method is that preparation and cleanup can take as much time as all other tasks in making the board. I understand the OP and why he doesn't want to deal with that each time he etches. Lacking a safe place that nobody disturbs I can't think of anything better that a couple of nested plastic food containers. The problem is how to add heating and a bubbler to this without making a mess.
