Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: Help with etching - accuracy

2003-07-15 by Ron Amundson

12 years ago I tested a HP IIIp, and found 0.005" skew error across a 7X10 test pattern done on an 8.5 X 11 transparency. I also tested a 4, and 5 laser jet and found it to be greated than 0.050" skew error. As far as ink jet, I ran an old HP550, and it was somewhere around 0.050" skew as well. I have no idea of the printers of today, but accuracy is not a concern of the printer people, as it really doesn't matter. Even for single sided, its not an issue, but for small vias, the error's require great attention to detail especially page orinetation, to try and make them line up on a large pcb

Thanks
Ron

  Interesting idea.

but what is the overall accuracy ?

it would seem that a PCB could be off more than just a few thou over
the lenght of a 10 inch board and still be very accuracte for
  locating chips and stuff.

Has anyone done realworld tests ?

I would assume that inkjet and laser and copiers would not be perfect
as the US treasury has dictated that such machine cannot be exact 1:1
ratios. goes to preventing the average Joe from making their own $$$$

  DAve
