Are you sure? I use HCl to remove the sludge that tends to accumulate when 

using FeCl3, it doesn't precipitate FeO.


That should be Fe(OH)2, rust. Besides the occasional acidification it needs aeration and some time to settle. At least that's my understanding of it. I stored it in a 2 litre PET bottle with some air space, and over time it turned a nice clear dark green with a brownish sludge at the bottom. After carefully pouring it into another bottle the sludge hasn't returned.
