I had a similar situation, twice ;-) Does the hose leave the tank below or above the etchant level? If you have a second container where it sits in, it is annoying, but imagine what it would be if there was no second container ;-) For the air hose you could also try a no-return valve like sold for fish tanks to prevent exactly that problem of water flowing back out.
