I don't think there is a easy way to get better uniformity. A spray etcher may not be that much more complicated in the end. For now i'm satisfied with what i have. The underetching is OK down to like 6.66mil which is the smallest i'll need for a long time. Also, by using ground planes one can keep "open areas" to a minimum and there's no need to wait for them to finish.
