via inserts?

2002-12-11 by David Saum

What are you folks using
for via inserts on homebrew
double sided boards?

I had some Mill-Max
http://www.mill-max.com
0566-2-15-15-21-14-10-0
or
0566-2-15-15-21-27-10-0
pins that worked quite
well but I have run out.

These are tiny gold plated
hollow pins with 0.039"od
and accept wires from
.015-.021". They are .138"
long so they stick out
of the back of the board
and make it easy to
solder to. On the top
of the board there
is a nice lip on the pin, but
you have to be careful
when you solder to the
top lip so that the solder
does not wick into the
hole. Note that there
a lot of other variations
of the basic variations
of the 0566-2 part that
have to do with the
coating (gold or tin).
I guess all of them would
do the job.

http://www.findchips.com
search on "0566" shows that
Digikey has them as a non stock item
requiring a 1000 purchase
for about $100. That would
last me a lifetime.

Anyone else have a better
source, or a better or cheaper
via insert?
