Series III WORM drive info

2004-03-18 by David J. Wilson

Hi,
just wanted to note that my Series III WORM drive is just
a Maxtor (now called Maxoptix) model# RXT-800S
this is an 800MB SCSI WORM full-height 5-1/4" internal drive

it seems this same model can be found all over Google
by searching for Maxoptix WORM and/or magneto-optical drives.

I've seen prices of $625 for refurbished models and tons
of other places in California that sell, repair, & service
the RXT-800S.

for example:

http://www.yourdrives.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=432
http://www.mctk.com/maxoptix.html
http://www.ezsystems.com/opticaldrives.htm
http://www.electcat.com/EDS-HOMEPAGE.htm
http://www.datastoragedistribution.com/worm.htm

but most important, I've noticed some MFX2 systems (including
the one on Ebay now) have the newer Maxoptix T5-2600 2.6GB
Magneto-Optical drive which can support the older 800MB WORM discs.
The T5-2600 is a little over $1000.

my Series III WORM drive is the Maxtor RXT-800S and it works,
but it's nice to know I can get a replacement or have it serviced.

It would be nice if Peter Wielk could comment on this
if he knows of any special concerns using another RXT-800S
with the Series III.

Dave
