I just uploaded a ton of floppy images (for the IIx and III) to nonmaskable.com. Please take a look. If you have other floppies that you would like imaged, but you don't have the right setup to do so, please let me know. I would be happy to image them for you. Joe

Yes it's possible and there was a German company that used to install 3'5" floppies in a Fairlight CMI IIx for aprox 700 Dm (350 Euro) back in the 90's. Hi Alexander, Unfortunately I have no further info about it, other than that I know it was available and that it was a German company. I didn't buy it at that time, cause I thought I could get it later. I just wrote a mail to my friend and asked if he happens to have more info on the subject. (I had a musicgear shop in the past, specialized in vintage and analogue gear). This friend was a German partner of mine. When I get more info, I'll let you know...... With any luck there will be a solution for all CMI's by the end of this year. I can't go into details yet, but it is looking good I think..... If this upgrade comes, there is no need for this 3,5" floppy replacement... Cheers, Peter Kersten. --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, Alexander Guelfenburg <vmebay@...> wrote:

Hi Joe, stupid question: If the PC can read 8" disks with a modified adapter, it should be possible to install a 3,5" PC drive to a CMI with a modified adapter, shouldn´t it?!?

This does work with the Series III, I built an adapter for mine a while back (and I sent one to KMI a few years ago). Note that there are at least 3 versions of the ROM for the QFC9 floppy controller: DQFC910, DFC911, and DFC912. If anyone has any other versions, I'd be very interested in getting a copy. Fairlight appears to have sold a 3.5" drive retrofit for the Series III, and the DFC912 seems to be the ROM that went with that. The driver in the ROM seems to be the same as the DFC911, with some formatting parameters changed (I believe this is to get the full 1.44MB from the 3.5" drive, vs. the 1.2MB you get with an 8" drive). I wasn't able to get the adapter to work with the IIx, however. I think it's because of a dependency on the DISK CHANGED signal, which the 3.5" drives don't (usually) provide. Some 3.5" drives apparently have jumpers or can be modified to provide DISK CHANGED, but I haven't experimented with that. Joe

I once had a IIx on my desk that had this mod installed. There was a board with some logic chips on it and the two 3.5" drives that were installed between the 8" drives. Worked beautifully (was very quiet). The chips on the board were either painted over or the designations were scratched off (can't remember). If I recall correctly the floppy format was not directly readable with a PC (but I could be wrong). The designer of this seems to have somehow disappeared. -- Malte Rogacki gacki@gacki.sax.de ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Don't forget to TURN ON THE SYNTHESIZER.
