Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: HxC and CMI IIx Floppydrive replacement

Think about this: If you hide your HxC in an empty slot, this meens that every time you want to acces it, you have to open the cagedoor. I personally wouldn't want that......... The door would show wearsigns very soon.... Not desirable I think.
An external box would be an option indeed. How about the upgrade from Joe (USB mouse and monitor) combined with the HxC all in one external box? By the way: there was talk about the option to add a modern USB numerical keyboard to the mouse/monitor upgrade, is that still in the planning?. I would realy like to have that upgrade. I don't need it now, because all works fine at the moment, but it's good to have it when I might need it in the future.
I think a frontplate in the Fairlight color, with the HxC situated a few cm's from the top, would be nice. This could replace the 8" drive including the plate left and right to the drive. If you want to hide it, it's easy to add a cover to it. I myself wouldn't hide it, I think. But that opinion may change
By the way, Jeff pointed out to me that one HxC emulates 2 drives, so it looks like we only need one HxC, not two!!
After mentioning the frontplate idea, Jeff pointed out that there is already a HxC version that has a frontplate http://torlus.com/floppy/index.php?2012/05/27/31-31-2-form-factor-sd-hxc-floppy-emulator-available.
However I already knew that and what I ment by frontplate is actually only a plate that surrounds the already existing front of the HxC. This "frontplate", is actually only a cover and needs no printing or whatsoever. It's only function is to cover the open spaces surrounding the HxC and it provides a way to hold the HxC.

Peter Kersten.

any chance we could develop a hidden drive solution ? I somehow don't want to temper with the original appearance of the cmi.

as I type this line a few ideas come to mind.. how .bout making a card witch holds the HxC and fit this one in one of the empty slots?

or maybe create a faceplate that you can open like a door hiding the HcX behind it and keeping the classic look of the cmi intact.....or a external box ofcourse.

any toughts on this .. or does my fear of losing the original industrial design seems ridiculous : ) ?
