Yup, Marty is correct. I have a Synclavier and the "Beat it" bell, is a Synclavier FM preset. Not only is it a preset, but the whole opening melody lick is actually lifted from a Synclavier demo LP ( I think there was some infringement lawsuits over the melody as a result)

Hi AndyG,
Its definately a Synclavier. I had the opportunity a few years ago to play a Synclavier II (FM only system) and its one of the presets.
There is a Synclavier demo LP and the start of Beat It is on there (or those first few notes). I'm pretty sure a bit of searching on the net will get you an mp3 of it.

Subject: [Fairlight-CMI] Bell sample at start of 'Beat It' is Fairlight?
Hi, just bought the Fairlight app (and an ipod to put it in!!) and found the sample 'SYNBELL5'.
To me it sounds EXACTLY like the bell sound at the start of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It', I can even play the notes of it on the keyboard.
But, searching the internet, it seems that only the Synclavier was used on the 'Thriller' album, not the CMI.
But it sounds EXACTLY the same!! And I'd love it if someone who has a CMI with this sample could confirm (or deny!) it is the same sound.
Thanks, and really enjoying the app!!
