A149-1 Question

A149-1 Question

2003-05-28 by ethanzer0

hey Bakis,

If you get a chance to ask Dieter
about the A149-1 I am curious if
he is planning on using vactrols
in the design. And, tell him I am
impressed by graphic design choice
for the front panel as it looks just
like the graphic from the Buchla 266.
I'm sure it will be a hot item once
available.

Cheers!

Ethan

Re: Buchla Barber Pole modules

I know of two people that have purchased Barber Poles, and both have
complained loudly about the build quality (and I'm just repeating
what two highly respected professionals have told me). I was told
they used nylon pots (which were allegedly off center to the
faceplate), and that one of the modules arrived DOA.

At the price they're charging for those things, you would think
they'd at least made sure they worked.

Regards,
Kevin

[Doepfer_a100] Buchla Barber Pole modules

2003-05-29 by Paul Schulz

hi list,

has anybody recognised that module 297 (infinite phase shifter) and 260
(duophonic pitch class generator) will be available from Buchla soon?
There will be only a limited number. Price is $1500 for the 297 and
$1250 for the 260. Expensive.... :-(

Gosh, Buchla´s faceplate design is sooo great! Does anybody know where
to get the colored knobs? I´d love to have my A-100 behind Buchla-esque
faceplates...

cheers
Paul

Re: Buchla Barber Pole modules

Disappointed? Not me. I don't think they're just too expensive...
they're WAY too expensuve. I mean, if anyone sees me spending $1200
on a phase shift filter, please take my credit cards away because
I've lost my mind.

I was simply mentioning that they also seem to mostly arrive broken.

Regards,
Kevin

Yeah, saw them myself a while back, and also thought "Crikey,
expensive!". On the other hand, to generate a Shepard tone with
Doepfer modules takes an A-191 and 8 VCOs and VCAs, which with 110s
and 132s comes to grand total of around $1130!

The little LED 'barber pole' display looks like a fun gimmick though,
and I bet that greatly adds to the cost, as it looks like it's made
of discrete LEDs, which therefore must take a lot of component
placement and soldering time, presumably by hand = costly! All in
all, very difficult to judge just how much bang one gets for one's
buck!

Timothy, I'm nitpicking, but you forgot to include the price of a
pair of A138s to mix down the 8 VCA outputs.

hi tim,
they are STILL TOO expensive,(the buchla modules), as,
for $1130 ,you get a doepfer a191(midi-cv plus shepard
gen.)and 8 vca's and 8 a110's with a million more
inputs, outputs and knobs!doepfer told me that the 80%
of a module's price goes to the knobs and jacks and
potentiometers.so,for a doepfer "barberpole effect",
you pay 1130$ for all these circuits
AND,mainly,physical components.for the buchla
barberpole,where do your $1500 go?to the circuits,that
are the cheapest parts of a module???...please,don't
tell me that they use goldplated knobs and jacks ;-)

Hi Joe, Bakis,

Yeah I know - I thought that was being just a little _too_ prissy!
Besides as I was adding it all up...

... I couldn't help but think the same as Bakis here! Still
it's 'horses for courses', and 'you pays yer money and you takes yer
choice'!

doepfer told me that the 80%
> > of a module's price goes to the knobs and jacks and
> > potentiometers.

If I'm to believe this, it must be 80% of the components - the boards
and faceplates must be a fair proportion of the final price, but the
bulk of the cost of a module must surely be down to the labour for
soldering/screwing it together?

so,for a doepfer "barberpole effect",
> > you pay 1130$ for all these circuits

Well the 260 obviously has a microcontroller in it; for what the 297
does, perhaps it does too, and so maybe they are trying to recoup
software development costs. Who knows. But it _would_ be nice to have
enough money to be able to justify spending $1500 on a single unit!
(Yasi, we envy you!)

I may have to pick up one of theses orphan modules.

You know, in some ways it's almost a shame that the A191 even has the
Shepard function.

One of Dieter's previous emails mentioned that the A191 doesn't sell
well. My guess is that a lot of folks dismiss the A191 because they
don't think the Shepard function is worth it. Too bad, because the
module is way worth having even if you never use the Shepard function
(as I never do).

Definitely one of the top under-rated modules.
