john,
welcome to the happy land of modulars ! as i look at my partially filled 4th
g6 frame, i already know what i plan for it and am starting to think in terms
of #5 ! then i see these gigantic systems in the photo gallery and i
realize, i`m not even close yet ! :^)
and thats just the doepfer stuff.....................

Right, dave.

The huge modular systems I see in photos make it even more difficult
for me to settle with only two rows of modules this first round. But
I must try to be strong! :-)

Kindest regards,
John

And by all means do tell us what you did buy and what you think about it
when you get it!

I certainly will. I sure wish the new TKB was available. I really
wanted to add that to my custom "basic" system. But I was at least
able to squeeze in the Trautonium controller! The Trautonium filter
and quantizer will have to come on the second pass. I also really
wanted that A-102 Diode Low Pass Filter too, but it looks like it
won't be available until some time in April - which probably means it
will be May by the time it hits the states.

Kindest regards,
John

Really?! I wasn't aware. The module overview page on the Doepfer
website still states "(coming soon)"

Now I'll have to dig out my configuration diagram and see what I can
remove in order to sqeeze it in. Does anyone know how the A102
filter sounds?

Kindest regards,
John

Re: Happy Land of Modulars

hello john,

the a102 is a nice piece of circuitry, but it is also strange.
the filter resonance reacts totally weird, depending on the
incoming signal level, cutoff frequency and resonance level,
so setting up the filter is a bit different, giving other
results that all my other filters (even those with diodes).

but nevertheless it is a nice sounding filter.
the slope of the filter is really interesting.
but i don't want to say more about the sound, because it
is all a matter of taste.

is the a102 the only lowpass filter you are planning to buy?

best wishes

That's what I was hoping :-)

That was exactly my reason for interest in this filter. I am
interested in eventually having as many modules as possible that can
exhibit some unpredictable behavior and empart a unique sonic color.

No. I plan to get the A-108 lowpass filter as well.

Now the question is whether I should drop the Audio Divider module to
make room for the A102.

John

if you mean the a115, then i would go for the a102.
but it's a real problem, all of these nice cute modules
are useful and desireable to have. and the a115 and a102
cannot really be compared, only in the sense of size.

i find the a163 vc divider more useful than the a115.
an even more different sounding filter is the a124 wasp,
is sounds more dirty, but you can't use it as a
sine oscillator at high resonance.

A102 Filter (was: Re: Happy Land of Modulars)

My favorite filters (today, that is) are the A124 Wasp filter for
reasons stated below, and the A109, which I just got.

I really didn't care much for the A115 until I started running
comical signals through it. I have to say that I've been using it
more than I thought I would. THat said, the A115 and A163 are
entirely different animals.

Regards,
Kevin

Bad news :-(

After double checking my configuration diagram again, I remebered that
I *already* dropped the A-115 to squeeze in the Trautonium
controller (A-198).

Now the only things left to exchange for the A102 are:

   A-117 (Digital Noise /808)
   A-116 (Waveform Processor)

And furthermore, I am now considering the A-124 (Wasp Filter). I
really wish there was someplace to go an hear the A-124 and A-102
filters to help me decide. (sigh) I wish this were easier. :-)

Kindest regards,
John

John,

I've throw a VERY quick A124 example in the files section. I
apologise that it's about a meg in size, but...

What I did was all manual, and quite frankly a bit cheesy. Having
said that, I think you'll get the general idea of what the filter
does.

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks for the post, Kevin!

I really like the character of this filter. I'll have to make some
adjustments to my configuration to make room for it...

i use the a117 really a lot, so i would drop the a116.
but well, thats just how i would decide.
again these modules aren't comparable.
