1200 mA Power supply

1200 mA Power supply

2015-09-05 by syndromeda@telenet.be

Hi,

I know this is not the first time it comes in a topic but I'm really confused now. I used Modular Grid to finally see and check what was build together in my racks....well, very confusing it is, one my 3 HE racks is 870 mA +12V and 542 mA -12V plus 50 mA 5V, the other one is 920 mA +12V and 443 mA -12V, the third even is 970 mA +12V and 737 mA -12V !!! And the strangest thing is that everything seems to work normal....how is that possible, is the 1200mA power supply capable of much more, or can it handle large peaks?

Cheers,

Danny

It's 1200mA for the +12v and 1200mA for -voltage....
Do the maths..

That should explain a lot but this is not so obvious on the website:
12 V Power supply II
assembled and tested power supply +/-12V@ 1200mA with ring core transformer.

Thanks,

That is how symmetrical power supplies are described usually. It is a
bit confusing for normal people. For technicians this is the normal naming.

The calculation of the currents is described in detail on the FAQ page of our website:

www.doepfer.com > FAQ > A-100 > Current specifications of A-100 modules and power supplies

We are about to specify the currents for +12V and -12V for each module separately (also it's not necessary when the A-100PSU2 or an
original A-100 case is used).

Best wishes

Hi

when each of your 3HE has its own power supply you should be fine, as each can run 1200mA on +12V as also on the -12V.
you do not add the +12V with the -12V to get the maximum current draw.

the calculation of the current draw should be done with maximum draw. so hopefully there will be no peaks above the calculation.

i have a case with a A-100PSU2 that draws aroun 1100mA from modules and runs ok. well it can get really hot in this case and i heared that maybe the power supply last not that long doing this...

some people say good practice is to have 1/3 or 1/4 headroom on the current consumtion.

felix
