Sounds like it is in a pendulum mode, which plays all steps forward and then all steps backward: steps 1-8 and then 8-1.  Does it run backwards half the time?  Is the Another pendulum mode plays step 1 and 8 only once, so 1-8 forward followed by 7-2 backward. 

  Turn the direction or mode dial fully counter-clockwise.  That's the manual dial, not the CV dial.   It's right next to the vertical row of LEDs on the A-154, top right corner of the module.  The LEDs tell you what mode it is in.
