Dark Time tuning

2012-08-02 by mark

I've had my Dark Time for the last year or so and I've just checked it with a chromatic tuner. It's playing all notes slightly flat. Any idea how to adjust it ?

Or do I just retune any oscillators it's controlling ?

There are two trimming potentiometers labelled "CV1 OUT SCALE" and "CV2 OUT
SCALE" on the Dark Time interface board. But before you try to readjust
these trimming potentiometers please measure the voltages. Exact +/-1.00V
voltage jumps should occur when the corresponding transpose switch is
operated. Only if you do not obtain exact 1.00V jumps the trimming
potentiometers may be readjusted to reach exact 1.00V jumps. Otherwise the
problem are the VCO(s) but not the Dark Time CV outputs. In any case a
precise voltage meter is required (4 1/2 digits recommended).

Best wishes

Though Dieter already answered, I jump in here:

if all(!) notes are playing the same flat, then the overall tuning of
the synth has to be adjusted, not the scaling, which Dieter described!!!

Only if higher notes are more flat than low notes, then the scaling is
involved!

Incidentally, for anyone who's tone deaf or tone hard of hearing, you can use a voltmeter to check the voltages coming out of the sequencer. The semitones should all be 0.08(3) volts apart from each other. I described this in more detail over at http://bytenoise.co.uk/CV%252Fgate as my partner and I were working out how the system works.

If the volts coming out of the sequencer match up with that chart, then the sequencer's fine, it's the oscillator. Use an automatic guitar tuner to tune it if need be.

Hope that helps,
Zoë.

Thanks to all three replies, I shall get my volt meter out before I start adjusting anything

Thanks
