a VC-Compressor module in the A100 ?

a VC-Compressor module in the A100 ?

2012-05-24 by Bakis Sirros

hi all,

i would really like to have a vc-compressor in my big euro/doepfer wall.

i usually create complex weird percussion scapes in my modular and a vc-compressor would really make sense in a modular, IMHO...

i was thinking that it would be great if Doepfer produced a nice VC-compressor module with many features (and a lower price than the Cwejman modules probably...)

to all members: interested?

should i start a poll about such an idea?

an A100 module with a cost around 300 euros, and with most parameters voltage controllable, would be great i think...

waiting for general feature suggestions, if you like the idea.

thanks,
Bakis.

Hi Bakis,

What do you expect from a VC compressor module? A compressor _is_
voltage controlled by definition, but from a voltage which it generates
itself.

As soon as you start to make the parameters voltage controlled (attack,
release,...) you are back at a VC-Slew Limiter a standard VCA and an
inverter. There is nothing new.

I don't see the advantage.

I agree. Synthwerks has been toying with the idea of a compressor/limiter modules for a while now and the knowledge that everyone will want VC of everything is what has slowed it down. There is not much value in VC of a compressor/limiter to me. VC of compression ratio? You could provide side-chain inputs of course and those could be a CV in but at that point it is just a VCA. The RMS detector could have CV out but that would not be terribly useful compared to a envelope follower with more controls. I think a brick wall limiter would be a very useful module to have in a system - a "speaker saver" modules that you can set a volume level that will never be exceeded and when that high-Q filter accidentally crosses the fundamental you speakers are still working. It would have very little or no VC in it though.

Cwejman makes the VC-FC and VC-FCS Stereo Compressors. Like most
Cwejman products its not cheap. You can check them out here:
